Protection from evil question.

Rules Questions

Hi all,
I' ve a question about this part of the spell:

"Second, the subject immediately receives another saving throw (if one was allowed to begin with) against any spells or effects that possess or exercise mental control over the creature (including enchantment [charm] effects and enchantment [compulsion] effects, such as charm person, command..."

If i buff a character with protection from evil before combat, does he beneficiate of this second save when he is charmed by an evil creature?
Or the save is only allowed when protection is cast when charm is already active?
T.y. And sorry for my crap english :)

He doesn't need a second save, as the spell grants total immunity against new charms.

Quote:

Second, the subject immediately receives another saving throw (if one was allowed to begin with) against any spells or effects that possess or exercise mental control over the creature (including enchantment [charm] effects and enchantment [compulsion] effects, such as charm person, command, and dominate person. This saving throw is made with a +2 morale bonus, using the same DC as the original effect. If successful, such effects are suppressed for the duration of this spell. The effects resume when the duration of this spell expires. While under the effects of this spell, the target is immune to any new attempts to possess or exercise mental control over the target.

In other words, if you buff a character with this spell before combat, he can't be charmed by an evil creature.

It's actually better than the second save. If he's charmed and then buffed, the charm is suppressed but not negated (and resumes after the buff expires), but if he's buffed first, the charm is actually prevented and will not start after the buff expires.

Very good news for my wizard!
A fantastic 1-level buff for a cheap wand.
I hope that my G.M. Would not nerf it!
Thank you for the answer :)

Well, not that fantastic. It only applies to spells/effects from evil casters, so a dryad can still string you up and hang you out to dry. It only affects charms and compulsions "that possess or exercise mental control," so even a simple sleep spell still gets through. And it has the problem of all one-minute defensive buffs that by the time you know you need it, it may be too late already.
