Ok so I'm running Rise of the Runelords in campaign mode. So, as I understand it I can report this and my players can get credit for one of their PFS characters. This seemed like a good idea even if some of them never go on to play PFS, some of them might and you never know it might take off.
Ok so far. Am I right in that:
1) If they have a PFS account already they must assign this chronicle to a character straight away, but it doesn't need to be applied(activated?) straight away. It can be applied when that character reaches the appropriate level.
2) most of the players will be working off of downloaded ID cards that I will hand out. I believe in this instance I assign the chronicle to the -1 character for that ID card and it marries up when that player formally registers.
Now dumb question on reporting. I just tried starting to report this and it seems that I need character names and factions. How do I do that for accounts that don't have characters yet or in the case of ID cards handed out, even accounts?
Do I have to wait until I get that information before reporting?
Is there a time limit on reporting?
I think that covers it - for now. There may be more dumb questions later...

There's currently a bit of trouble with the reporting system, so your players will need to create accounts, and use the codes on the card to register their number. From there, they can go to https://secure.paizo.com/pathfinderSociety/myAccount, and select "Register a New Pathfinder Roleplaying Character."
They pick which character gets the chronicle when they earn it (when they complete the appropriate portion, of the adventure, as listed in the beginning of the document with the chronicles). The chronicle has a level range on it (upper right corner). If the character is in that range, they get the benefit now. If they are lower level, they get the reward as soon as the character hits the lowest level listed.

Correct. If a player decided to assign his chronicle for the first part to a lvl 1 character, it does not come into effect untill the character levels to lvl 2. Then it 'activates' like you said, bringing that character instantly to lvl 3.

Yes, that is the way it should work, but the reporting system has some troubles right now. So it might not work as intended.

This ties in to your question above. Normally when a character is registered, and you put in their number xxxx-1 into the reporting system, it auto populates the name and faction of that character.
As said, once the players register, this should automatically be applied after they register. You do not have to wait with reporting. Just fill in what you have, and check back once your players have actually registered to check if everything is complete.

@Woran: I think that the sanctioned part of Book 1 for Rise is tiered as 3-5, not 2-4.
There is also an option, explained in the Guide, to allow a player to take the chronicle onto a 1st level PC, with lowered gold, and delayed access to any boons, but any items listed are unlocked immediately.
Yup. Burnt Offerings is a 3-5 sheet.

I am running it currently, with my group's next session being this Friday (the 13th). Not sure how seriously I am expecting them to get themselves into the TPK zone, simply because of the date.
And I have to get back to building Thistletop, since they may actually get there this session... They only have a little bit of the current area left to explore. And they finally managed to deal with the <redacted> Q-thing.
Roll20 and non-standard sized maps. Anyone got the Thistletop map sized appropriately to play well with Roll20?
