"New" Sega Genesis-Looking for games

Video Games

My awesome girlfriend got me a Sega Genesis for Christmas as well as Sonic the Hedgehog, Comix Zone, and Dungeons and Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun. Three of my favorite games from childhood.

Now I'm out on a mission to collect a bunch of classics from the 16bit era of gaming. You guys got any ideas on some good Genesis games? Got a favorite childhood game? I'd love to hear suggestions.

Liberty's Edge

Star Control, Phantasy Star 2, Phantasy Star 3, any of the Road Rash games, any of the Strike games, Desert strike, jungle strike, ect..

Dude. DUDE. Your girlfriend, is AWESOME.

As for games, Shining Force II was my absolute favorite game as a kid. It was my gateway into RPGs and DnD and all the goodness the genre has to offer. It's more akin to the Fire Emblem games with large, grid based tactical turn-based maps. Highly recommend it.

As for others, I can recall having an absolute blast with my younger brother playing Cyborg Justice. The Sonic Games (particularly 2 and 3) were both exceedingly great.

Also a hoot and worth getting: Earthworm Jim and Earthworm Jim 2!

Nice recommendations CapeCod, Star Control and Road Rash are amazing games.

My fav RPGs were Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday and Shadowrun

As for action type games. Altered Beast, Revenge of Shinobi, Golden Axe and NBA Jam I recall as being fun

I shouldn't answer, since I never had a Genesis, but I can't help but ramble about my life story. Back in the early 1990s, I went crazy trying to decide whether to get a Genesis or a Super NES. My final decision to get the SNES was the right one, but a couple of games gave me pause.

One was "Aladin". I tried the Genesis version a few times in the stores. It was so animated and fun! The SNES version paled in comparison.

And one of my favorite games at the time was "Klax". I must have lost a ton of quarters to the arcade game. If the Genesis version is anything like the arcade, I'd recommend it.

This! Also, Pirates! Gold was great.

Hmmm...well you got a great one already (Warriors of the Eternal Sun). I remember going and using slings to bring down really hard foes at first level!

If I had to go through a lists of favorites....hmmm...

Phantasy Star IV (this is a MUST...absolute favorite game on Genesis).

Beyond Oasis (another really great game)

Streets of Rage I-III

Golden Axe I-III

Shining Force I and II

If you REALLY like RPGs...maybe Shining in the Darkness

Afterburner II

Space Harrier

Disney's Aladdin (If you like that type of game...for the time the art was great!)

I personally liked G-LOC...but this isn't everyone's style...very much like Afterburner

If you don't mind EXCESSIVELY HARD platformers, the following two are great...

Contra: Hard Corp (I think I survived about 5 seconds the first time I played this...I eventually beat it with several endings though...yes...it has branching storylines and each has a different ending).

Castlevania: Bloodlines

Gunstar Heroes was also a fun one.

NBA JAM if you like that type of game.

Samurai Showdown and Street Fighter II champion edition OR the New Challengers (don't just get the vanilla Street Fighter II though) if you like Fighting games.

Those would be my top recommendations.

Cyberball
Kings Bounty

the rest of my list GreyWolfLord pretty much already covered

~watches intently~ I may just have to pick up a Sega Genesis sometime or another.

Might and Magic was a good one. Long game, very easy to get killed.
Faery Tale - weird game, if you die, you play as your character's brother. I think there were a total of 3 brothers, so if you died 3 times, it was all over.

I second the Phantasy Star series - hard to beat for early console RPGs.

I second Gunstar Heroes. One of the finest examples of run-n-gun action out there. Colourful, smooth, and action packed. And everyone needs to experience the awesomeness that is Seven Force.

I heartily recommend Rocket Knight Adventures. An excellent platformer that's straightforward and challenging without being boring or maddingly difficult. There was also a sequel called Sparkster, but I never had the chance to play it. From what I've heard, it's not bad, but it loses some of the style the first game had. Also note that the SNES Sparkster, despite the same name, is not a port, but an entirely new game.

Jurassic Park may be worth a look. A somewhat slower paced platformer with a nice graphical style. Play as Dr. Grant or a Velocirator. Grant is fun, but tearing through soldiers as the raptor is a blast. The semi-sequel, Rampage Edition, speeds things up a bit. Not my taste, but still enjoyable.

Oh! Almost forgot! Vectorman and Vectorman 2. Action platformers though with more emphasis on exploration. Good level design and fun backdrops to keep things entertaining.
