Advice for an Ancestor Oracle

Advice

I'm considering playing an ancestor oracle for my next character but I have a few questions about the Ancestral Weapon mystery:

*Ancestral Weapon (Su): You can summon a simple or martial weapon from your family’s history that is appropriate for your current size. You are considered proficient with this weapon.*

These two lines are where I need clarification.

First, is it the same weapon every time? Maybe daddy was a great archer with a longbow, but granny was a melee brute barbarian with a great sword? Can you chose something different every time?

Second, if this weapon is martial, the oracle is proficient with the summoned weapon but not with a mundane version of that weapon? Can the oracle take weapon focus with their summoned weapon? If the choice is locked as one specific weapon, do you gain proficiency with it?

Thoughts would be appreciated. I don't want to add abilities to the text that aren't there, but I think the text is ambiguous as written.

Frankly I hate to say it but this is a case of, ask your DM. You could tell your dm that you have different weapons but at the end of the day, if your dm doesn't let you use more than one weapon, the point is moot. It's easy enough to explain that you have different weapons in your family line that you could use tho.

As for weapon focus...no discount here, if it is multiple weapons, you'll need to buy different weapon focus etc...but well I wouldn't worry about that. You are an oracle, you can cast buffs like divine favor to get more attack and damage easily.

You can summon any simple or martial weapon and the choice is made when you summon it.

You can take weapon focus, but it only functions for a single weapon, and it only works when you are proficient in the weapon.

So, for example, if you can summon a longsword, you can take Weapon Focus (Longsword). However, if you pick up any old longsword, Weapon Focus won't apply because you're not proficient--you're only proficient in the one you summon.

My concern is burning multiple feats. The oracle would be proficient with the summoned weapon, but if i wanted weapon focus or improved critical, I'd need to take proficiency anyway.

No, you can take the feat during one of those moments when you are proficient. You just can't benefit from the feat unless you're proficient at the time. It's no different from if you have Power Attack and you get hit by a Ray of Enfeeblement that drops you below 13 Strength.
