A bat and a ball cost $1.10

A bat and a ball cost $1.10. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does each cost individually?

(It's a christmas gift bundle.)

You probably go that wrong:

Think about it first, before scrolling down for the answer.

We all did, it's painfully easy.

GM just has low expectations.

It's almost like she has no faith in people's intelligence or something.

Lol is there a difference? Wooden stakes and bat to beat them in with.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Once you have the bat, you can then mug them to get your $1.10 back.

What can I say, it's a classic. And I got it the first time.

I've seen this problem before. It's mentioned in the book, Thinking fast & slow by Kahneman. It's usually a case of going intuitive to answer the question. Our guts are wrong surprisingly often when thinking numerically. (At least that's a point in the book).

Liberty's Edge

It's $1.00 and $0.10 because it looks that way. I don't care if $1.00 isn't actually $1.00 more than $0.10!!!

More proof of maths duplicitous nature.

Is that before or after the mail in rebate?

Well, in some US states you all would be wrong. You forgot the sales tax included in the price...

:D

I don't like baseball.

x + (x+1) = 1.10

2x + 1 = 1.10

2x = 0.10

x = 0.05

(BTW, this puzzle dates to the 1920s. I usually update this puzzle for inflation: "A bat and a ball together cost $55. The bat costs $50 more than the ball. How much does each cost.")

Labels! Labels, dear fellow!

I've just realised I got this all wrong.

Christmas gift bundles are usually discount bundles.

So, there's a good chance that anyone buying the two separately would be paying more than $1.10
