Ranged weapons used as melee weapons and other effects

Rules Questions

Silver Crusade

So say I have a weapon from the ranged category, like a chakram or a javelin, how can I tell what hand category it applies to?

This is important because you can have 4 light weapons or 2 one handed weapons in a blinkback belt, but to knowledge such weapons do not have such categorizations.

Also if I wanted to Two weapon fight with chakram, do I take the one handed penalty or the light weapon penalty?

Are there any rules in place that answer these questions?

Much like improvised weapons, this would be subject to GM discretion.

Liberty's Edge

Doesn't the javelin already have an allowance for using it in melee?

EDIT: The javelin description says you use it as if you're nonproficient with it, so you would get a -4 to attack but can use its damage and crit modifier.

PRD says wrote:
The chakram is a simple, elegant, and highly portable thrown weapon. It is a flat, open-centered metal discus with a sharpened edge. You can wield the chakram as a melee weapon, but it is not designed for such use; you take a –1 penalty on your attack roll with the weapon and must succeed at a DC 15 Reflex save or cut yourself on the blade (half damage, no Strength modifier)

Javelin counts as One Handed doesn't it? I think it's under TWF for thrown weapons. I'll have a look.

Under Two Weapon Fighting p202 in the CRB

Quote:

Thrown Weapons: The same rules apply when you

throw a weapon from each hand. Treat a dart or shuriken
as a light weapon when used in this manner, and treat a
bolas, javelin, net, or sling as a one-handed weapon.

Personally I would put Chakram as a Light for throwing (they are 1lb after all) but as a One-handed for melee to account for the awkwardness. That's just an opinion though.

Thanks for the insight. This is the first bit of RAW I've seen on the matter.

I was hoping they would have expanded which weapons fall into which categories

You could take some guidance from the updated Fighter Weapon Groups in the back of the Ultimate Equipment. Chakram shows up under Heavy Blades in there so I presume I'm wrong. As it is a 1-8 damage weapon it would also make sense to make it a One Handed rather than Light Weapon.

Don't make a chakram a 1-h weapon because then, it opens up wielding one in 2 hands for 1.5x Str and Power Attack; and that just isn't feasible given the design of the weapon.

Good point, yet reality isn't necessarily, or even should be, taken into account in PF.

I mean Studded Leather is really what a Brigandine looks like rather than a real armour, the Bill in UE is a Halberd, how could a Nodachi have Brace? etc.
