Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

Hey everyone, I just picked up the Runelords Base set and the character addition today. The friendly clerk at my game store also introduced me to the Pathfinders Guild so I bought a cleric deck to play that as well (1st game is tonight). I am pretty stoked to play this RPG/Deck building hybrid and was wondering if anyone has any pointers or words of wisdom for this humble noob.

Roll high and have fun.

First of all, welcome to PACG! It is an awesome game. Just to warn you, the Card Guild scenarios can be a bit tougher than the normal game scenarios. So don't get discouraged if you loose or your character dies tonight. You'll definitely do better the more you play. But don't let that stop you from going tonight.

There is a guide for new players on boardgamegeek here (it was made for RotR so some of the terminology needs updated). And some other things you might find helpful here.

Just take it slow the first couple of times and go through the steps in the various sequences one by one. Then once you get the hang of it, you will move much faster.

And most of all: enjoy! It is a game meant to be enjoyed.

Hello and welcome to the game!

For some tips, I'd say first try to give yourself a crash course in the game by trying a few solo games of Runelords if you have time. Get a feel for how the game plays. It's really pretty simple when you get into it, but it does have a good number in intricacies that you'll get familiar with in time. Jumping right into an organized play game is not recommended by the guide and the developers, so you may want to see if you can play a demo or the intro scenario On The Horizon for your first night if it's available. Completing either will give you a small upgrade to start out with for your Cleric deck.

As far as your Cleric goes, I think it is a pretty nice deck for beginners. I would recommend if you're playing anyone other than Zarlova, focus on using weapons for your combat and use your spells for Cure and utility purposes. The other three clerics are just as good, if not better, when using weapons than the attack spells that are available early on and you get to keep weapons in your hand instead of discard or recharge them. You may want to hold onto one attack spell early on just in case you run into something that needs Magic to defeat, like ghosts, but feel free to ditch it once you have some magic weapons. Be careful with Heggal and Kyra as they both do not start out Proficient with Weapons. You'd be tempted to start with Swords if you use Kyra due to her power that gives her a boost, but most (if not all) swords penalize you if you are not proficient. Yeah, Weapon Proficiency is a bit of a feat tax for Kyra, but after she has that, and then when she'll later be able to increase her sword bonus to a +4, she can become a bit of a combat beast (not to mention you don't have to worry about your swords being Magic with her).

Hope that's at least a little bit of help to get you started. Good luck with your first game.
