Plugg's Uglies and Pirate Hunting

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

So, little situation tonight during Plugg's Uglies. The scenario says "Before you attempt a check to defeat a bane with the Pirate trait, recharge your hand and draw the same number of cards." Pirate Hunting has the Pirate trait, but its check to defeat is "None". Do you recharge your hand during your encounter with Pirate Hunting?

You still technically have the "attempt the check" step of the encounter, but you never actually attempt a check. I decided no, but was curious what others would think, as I could see reasons for it both ways.

No check, no recharge.

Thanks Mike. That was what I figured. I missed doing it early in the scenario on a monster, and so I was being hyper vigilant to not miss it again. We got a few regular pirate monsters and another pirate barrier and then Pirate Hunting popped up.

Since the check was "none" as opposed to "see below" it made sense not recharge. (So now I see another good reason for the faq on that.) It felt like if I could be asked "What was the check to defeat that barrier?" And I could respond "There was none." Then why would I recharge?
