Steel Hound and Studied Combat / Strike

Can these guys use SC/SS with firearms? As written it seems like a no but given that rogues can SA within 30 feet (yes I know, not exactly the same thing mechanically) does it not seem somewhat like a worst of both worlds build?

Here's an archetype that screams ranged combat but using it means nerfing one of the major aspects of the class itself.

Or have I got this completely wrong?

Steel hounds still need the Ranged Study feat if they want studied combat for their firearms.
