From Varisia to Earth... seeking advice for a PC to get back "home"

Rise of the Runelords

I have a PC Kylan who was to become head of a ninja guild on Earth, but a rival cast a vortex spell that stripped Kylan of her honed skill and abilities and dumping her in Magnimar on Golarion in time to start the Rise of the Runelords.

OOC'ly, I explained to the player Kylan's backstory should have her at a level 10 to 15 leading a Ninja Guild, but she was going to be a level 1 with the other players for RotRL. I did not want to "cheat" the player or take away from Kylan's concept, but rather have her balanced fair with the other players and honor the creativity that went into her. So I suggested the "Dark Vortex" had the effect of a level drain as well as dumping Kylan into Golarion. The player agreed and appeared pleased with my effort both to keep the party fair and respect Kylan's character concept.

I also promised I would weave hints on the way to return "home" into the campaign with a target of the option to leave Golarion before the campaign, but hope Kylan would feel invested enough to finish the final boss and "retire home".

I did glance at "Rasputin Must Die!" but that AP's method to move the party between Golarion and Earth simply won't work in this instance. I could waggle a GM ferret paw and invoke a high-level spell, or drop some Portal of Make It Happen.

Instead, I found the forum to have some very talented and experienced people full of knowledge about APs and How Stuff Happens In Golarion. I'm aware of Leng's role in RotRL, though I've not read through that part in detail as we are still in Burnt Offerings. What are some published AP, Pathfinder Tales books or other works where this has been done? This is NOT counting "Rasputin Must Die", since that method would not suit the RotRL AP. What are some other suggestions for hints of "getting back home" that tie into the Runelords?

There is also http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NiceJobBreakingItHero "Nice job, Kylan! Karzoug is now on his way to Earth!!!" My hope is that I can do a few changes that do not change the basic story-line, but have it so Kylan's quest to return home would appear as if RotRL was always meant to be played that way.

Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions. :)

Leng.

Spires of Xin Shalast:

Ther dimension of dreams touches on all worlds, and so it would easy to have any number of effects achieve a link between Earth and Golarion. For example, the destruction or re-purposing of the Leng device, a magical backlash within the occluding field after Karzoug's demise, the erosion of reality through continuous use of Wish spells, or any number of other effects. If you want to run a more detailed journey in Leng, Shattered Star #5 has a gazetteer.

Thank you for pointing the way. Leng seems like a best bet at this point.

My suggestion would be the Leng Device or similar as well.
It could be Karzoug has/had some interest in the period the character came from and had established a link , probably to a rival ninja clan this could mean that rivals from the characters past could also be in Golarion and perhaps a person or artefact of importance from the characters time is also in Golarion playing some role in supporting Karzougs return or some other plan of his.

Scarab Sages

As another option, if you really want to tie it in with the RotRL storyline, have the spell that brought the character to Golarion tie in with

Spoiler:
the reactivation of the Runewell network, and when Karzoug is defeated, the character would "snap back" to where she came from. Maybe the person who cast it was somehow a servant of Karzoug's in the first place! Maybe bringing the character to Golarion was part of a plan to help the Runelord's awakening...

At the moment I think a focus on area X12 "The Leng Device" will... make things interesting. I'll sort it out as we get more close. Thank you all for your suggestions! :D

You could inatead have the party's wizard find a scroll of interplanetary teleport.

But I like the Leng Device idea!

and kudos to you Romaq for trying to find a way to make it work rather then dismiss it, good for you:)

Thank you. I did the game where I had ideas for my character that had me really excited. But I had to play the game of "GM May I", for which the answer was "no". I had ideas for background, but 3.5 doesn't do "traits", and the answer was "no". Things I wanted to do as the PC, "Well you have to have ranks in Knowledge (Nobility), and Knowledge (History), and yada-yada...

So for this player, I wanted only to address the specific things that would negatively impact the group while still honoring the creative vision for Kylan.

And someday, I aspire to find a GM that will allow me to finally play a Feyrret (Fey Ferret) race PC. But that's a quest for someday. :)

Something to keep in mind. Thassilon is a splinter sect of the Azlanti civilization. Now, think about Azlant and the legends around it. Sounds an awful lot like a legendary civilization from earth, doesn't it.

Now, it could just be coincidence that there are two cultures with very similar names, and very similar places in history, that just happened to live on a continent in the ocean to the west of the largest landmass on the planet, and just happened to disappear overnight in a great catastrophe. It could be. And it could just be coincidence that someone from this world that bears some striking similarities with this other world happens to get brought there at the same time that powerful artifacts powered by souls from a long dead civilization that is so much like another long dead civilization are powering up for the first time in millenia. It could all be coincidence.

Myself, I'd be wondering if there are similar artifacts on the world this character came from, and if there might not be a way to make them resonate. Maybe the vortex didn't strip her of her abilities. Maybe it only sent part of her soul through. What if there are two of her now? What if the other half kept her skills, but not her personality. What if what the rival really did was create a puppet with all her abilities, but no soul, memories, or will of it's own?

Perhaps the lost capital of this lost civilization might have the answers?
