Windward Isle Question

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Windward Isle says "If you move here, you may draw a card."

The Base Set Rules on p.17 say "If you move or are moved while commanding the ship, other characters on the ship may choose to move with you."

So if Character A, B and C are all at location X and at the start of A's turn he moves (in a scenario where the ship is not docked such as The Lady's Favor") does everyone get to draw a card?

I ask this because the wording is a little ambiguous. I believe the intent is NO but "If you move or are moved while commanding the ship, other characters on the ship may choose to move with you." Emphasis mine.

Appreciate your thoughts.

So the question is whether those who choose to move with the ship are moving or being moved...and whether only the former counts as moving. Interesting. Personally it seems to me that they are allowing themselves to BE moved, and so would not get to draw a card. Interested to hear a ruling on this one.

Yeah I believe that's the intent as well. Being moved doesn't count as moving... but its a bit grey in the rules and wanted to check about the intent.

Maybe Windward Isle is supposed to be a windfall for the party who stays together on the ship or coordinates to get everyone aboard at the same time to make the trip.

The rules don't explicitly state that effects that rely on movement happen to other members if they move with you, however, the rules do state that effects that prevent another character from moving do keep that character form moving with you.

That implies that the movement the other characters do is actually normal movement as far as the rules are concerned.

In effect, the captain moving the ship allows the other characters on that ship an immediate free move if they can move, and if they chose to, then they move as well. They are not being forcefully moved, but instead they are choosing to move on their own. This movement is also mentioned directly under the Move phase for "your turn" (even though the specifics of that movement are in another section).

Do note, too, that even if the current character is forcefully moved, the other characters can still choose to move with that character, so even at that point, it's still their choice to move or not to move, even though the current commander didn't have a choice.

So, that being said, I believe any location with an effect that triggers when you leave or when you move there would trigger for every person individually that does so.

And, in addition to all of the above, as it was mentioned before, the card says "If you move here" so regardless of whether you "move" or "are moved" (choose to move there or something else moves you there), you are moving there, so the effect should trigger. This works pretty much the same as any location that says "If you leave" and then a bane forces you to leave that location.

The location doesn't have to specify whether it was by choice or not. If it was intended that the locations only count for when someone chooses to move there, then it most likely would have been worded as such.

I'm with Firedale on this one. I think everyone gets to draw a card.

Did A, B, or C move to Windward Isle? Yes? Then they may draw a card.
