Drow rogue, sunlight and advantage

4th Edition

how does sunlight affect a drow rogues sneak attack or a drow assassins advantage?

seems like it should be obvious, you do not have advantage, nor are you subjected to disadvantage (if one thing gives one, and another thing gives the other, they cancel each other out).

Sneak attack damage can only be applied if

you have advantage

another enemy of the target is within five feet of the target, that other enemy isn't incapacitated, AND you do not have disadvantage on the attack roll

It's pretty straightforward. Drow have disadvantage in direct sunlight; therefore, if they do something that would normally gain advantage, it merely negates the disadvantage, allowing them to act normally. Drow cannot gain advantage in direct sunlight, period. On cloudy days, in thick forests, indoors, or underground, they're fine.

Drizz't overcame that with time and discipline, so presumably other drow could too, but that would be up to the DM to rule on.

wow really hurts rogues. Thats what i thought. My DM as some would has adventures outdoors in daylight so making a drow low level rogue just went up in smoke.

Well, think of it as a flaw and come up with a cool way to get around it. How about some steampunky dark crystal goggles that negates the disadvantage? That becomes an interesting tactical choice– an intelligent foe could rip 'em off and leave you dazzled.
