Signs that tell you that you actually lost connection - even if you can play on

Losing connection is bad.

Losing connection and trying to do something and play on for half an hour is worse. So here are a few signs that tell you that you are actually offline

1) the chat no longer updates (beware - I have seen up to 30 sec delay)
2) you can't interact with certain bits in the game - for example you can click on a trainer but he doesn't offer training, you can no longer gather at a rock no matter how long you click, you seem not to effect enemies
3) you can attack a Thornguard or fellow player and don't lose reputation
4) you walk through a group of many monsters unharmed
5) monsters you met gather at the corner of the small map/circle and seem never to get off anymore
6) you walk against an invisible wall trying to get into the next hex

I guess the program is able to interact with what is loaded - so some attacks still work. But other bits just don't.

The best to do - log out and log in again.

That explains a lot of what's happened to me over the last month....

Three times last night this happened to me. It is a reasonably regular occurrence.

I had a friend on the other day, I could see her interact with everything, but she could not see the Thornguards or any players at all.

I find it interesting that when I log out, I occasionally find the application closing instead of removing me to the login screen. I'm now thinking that may be another sign.

Easiest way to tell is try and type in local chat.

Note if you "disconnect" while in range of an archer shooting at you he will still be able to kill you, you just do not know it till you logout and back in and find yourself at a shrine. Any new monsters cannot hit you. Also other players can see you ingame but not interact with you.

Interesting while disconnected you cannot interact with anything in game but seem to be able to move to a new location safely as when you relog you come back at the last location you walked to.

Here is my thoughts on the matter from another thread after trying a few connections:

Quote:

I have three places I connect from (taking the same laptop and install with me) and one is far worse than the other two despite all three being fiber broadband to the premises.

All three connections play EVE and other games fine but PFO is almost unplayable on one and perfect on the other two.

No problems with Alpha 7.

It seems that Alpha 8 is very very VERY sensitive to any lag or slight momentary interruption to the service, if the connection drops even for a fraction of a millisec the game seems to lose the plot.

So its not the speed of connection that is an issue a lot of the time it is QoS and at present PFO is far more touchy about Qos than most other games.
