[PFS] Warpriest Build tuning

Advice

Liberty's Edge

My goal is to have a Warpriest that fights well, heals and buffs "well-enough" and has some actual RP skills, since that matters in PFS and people look to a "Cleric" to be able to lead.

When I say heals and buff "well-enough" I mean he can do the job if a dedicated Cleric or Bard isn't around, but the build won't focus on it. Thus far (Level 3) I've been essentially using CLW/Bless/Guidance and then hitting things hard.

Here is my problem, I feel like I'd be better off with a Paladin. So I'm trying to find a way to make this character more than just a thuggish, weaker, paladin.

I chose Greatsword because Sacred Weapon only seems useful if you go with a poor weapon (dagger spec?) or sword and board through high-levels (Scimitar and shield). Even then it is horribly limited to 1 round/level [/end rant]

Level 12 plan so far:

M'Doch
Half-orc Warpriest of Cayden Cailean
CG Medium humanoid (human, orc)
Init +5; Senses darkvision 60 ft.; Perception +8
--------------------
Defense
--------------------
AC 20, touch 11, flat-footed 19 (+9 armor, +1 Dex)
hp 27 (3d8+9)
Fort +6, Ref +3, Will +7; +2 Trait bonus vs. mind-affecting effects for 1 hour after drinking alcohol
Resist fortified drinker
--------------------
Offense
--------------------
Speed 20 ft.
Melee
. . mwk cold iron greatsword +7 (2d6+4/19-20)
. . warhammer +5 (1d8+3/×3) (with a Heavy Shield when needed)
--------------------
Statistics
--------------------
Str 21 (includes racial +2)
Dex 12 (Dex enough for Plate)
Con 14
Int 10 (I want some skills)
Wis 16, (Considering dropping to 14)
Cha 8 (Makes Diplomacy tough, but otherwise dumpable)
Base Atk +9; CMB +14; CMD 25
Feats Improved Initiative, Power Attack, Toughness (Is there a better choice?), Weapon Focus (greatsword)

I really need help with feats! I get 4 bonus fighter feats + 6 regular

Alt Racial Traits City-Raised, Sacred Tatoo
Traits fortified drinker, seeker
Skills Diplomacy +14, Intimidate +16, Knowledge (local) +3, Knowledge (religion) +4, Perception +10, Sense Motive +11; Racial Modifiers +2 Intimidate, +2 Knowledge (local)
--------------------
Special Abilities
--------------------
Are the Domains OK?
Travel Domain: Agile Feet (Su) As a swift action, ignore difficult terrain penalties (even magical ones) for 1 rd.
Good Domain: Holy Strike (Su) Touched weapon deals +1d6 dam vs. evil foes for 1 min.
Fortified Drinker +2 save vs. mind-affecting for 1 hr after drinking alchohol.
Orc Blood Half-orcs count as both humans and orcs for any effect related to race.

You have to find ways to take advantage of the Warpriest's unique abilities. If you build it like a Fighter with some spells you're probably going to be underwhelmed and would be better off making a Paladin. That also means relying more on spells than martial prowess, which in turn means tighter resource management.

This still needs a lot more optimization, but it's one way I'd approach a Half-Orc Warpriest of Cayden Cailean:
--------------------
Statistics (@ Level 12)
--------------------
Str 13
Dex 20 (includes racial +2)
Con 14
Int 10
Wis 14
Cha 10 (could dump more if you like)
Base Atk +9; CMB +7; CMD 25
Feats Weapon Finesse, Power Attack, Weapon of the Chosen, Improved Weapon of the Chosen, Greater Weapon of the Chosen
Bonus Feats Weapon Focus (Rapier), Weapon Specialization (Rapier), Improved Critical (Rapier), Greater Weapon Focus (Rapier), Greater Weapon Specialization (Rapier)

Alt Racial Traits City-Raised, Sacred Tattoo
Traits fortified drinker, fate's favored
--------------------
[b]Offense

--------------------
Melee
. . +1 agile rapier +17/+12 (1d10+10/15-20)
. . +1 agile rapier +19/+19/+14 (1d10+21/15-20) (power attack + divine power + fate's favored)

It's not overwhelmingly powerful, but it's more thematic for a priest of Cayden Cailean--and you also have spell support, blessings and sacred weapon to throw on top of it. Bull's Strength to boost damage until you can afford an Agile weapon, for example.

Use the Good blessing for 1d6 and Sacred weapon for another 1d6 from Frost, Shock, or Flaming. That's 3d6 per hit if you're fighting an evil enemy and pick the right elemental damage.

You could look into various critical feats with your bonus feats (sickening, blinding, etc.). You could get Dazing Assault with your L12 bonus feat.

how are you getting Weapon Specialization, GWF, & GWS they are a fighter only feats or does warpriest have the ability to take into fighter feats?

Warpriests can take Fighter-only feats with their bonus feats at level 3, 6, 9, etc.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Trait fates favored. Boosts sacred tattoo and a jingasa of fortunate soldier.

It also super charges divine favor spell.

A must-have, for those swift action divine favors you get (my Oracle is so jealous...). But if you're already level 3, it looks like you'll have to take the Additional Traits feat. For the other trait, Deft Dodger wouldn't be a bad idea to boost the Reflex saves.

Yeah it is worth extra traits. You should be fervor divine favor and not bless as a fervor bless only effects the Warpriest.

Sacred weapon is not a 1/round a level. Using the enchanting part is but the damage table is a static change to your weapon damage if you so choose. Your right about it being better with a sword and board type. A rapier or scimitar tend to get the most out of sacred weapon.

Another key factor is fervor doesnt require a free hand. Which means your not using a weapon cord to juggle a weapon like a paladin.

Your comparison to a paladin is way off. Your not bound to lawful goodie good. Your also able to cast more and higher level spells as a swift action. The blessings also add something to do if you dont make it to the target in the first round. If you feel too paladinish then feel freeto something a paladin can not. I will also point out that you can use cleric spell cocompletion items up to 6th level. That is big compared to a paladin who must get UMD.
