So, I have a couple friends who wanted to learn how to play Pathfinder, and I decided to use Second Darkness as the campaign, as it was also my first time GM'ing.
The first snarl though has been that one of the new guys was dead set on playing a Paladin, and has so far played his character as refusing to talk to evil individuals. Well, I got around it the first night by giving Saul a potion to hide his alignment. But I'm curious if anyone else has any experience with something like this, and possible ways to get around the issue.

Give him 1 level of Infiltrator Inquisitor or a ring of mind shielding.
Undectectable alignment lasts 24 hours if the npc has access to it.

Saul is 4th level and not a cleric of an evil deity. As such, he has no evil aura to be detected by Pathfinder rules.
(Note that Second Darkness was written for D&D 3.5, where evil creatures under 10 hit die did have a faint evil aura. If you're running it with Pathfinder rules, you can ignore that paragraph about what to do if the PCs detect evil.)

Additionally, even if they do suss out that he's evil, there's a sidebar that adresses what to do in that case. I found my second darkness party to be far more trusting than I had expected, but it doesn't disrupt the path much if they don't work with Saul. you can have them do odd jobs until they are of level to return to the Gold Goblin violently.

I actually didn't like the idea of Vancaskerin as evil. I re-jiggered him as a failed criminal who discovered Desna, goddess of luck, (or vice versa) and is trying to start up this casino to bring luck to those who really need it. And also to take money from the many wicked folks of Riddleport. I retooled Samaritha Beldusk as the puppetmaster, making her a lvl 5 witch in league with the Drow. I backed her up with some lvl 2 and 3 thugs, and a good fight occurred.
(I also made this change in case any of my players were reading up on the module, and thinking Vancaskerin was the villain and Samaritha was an ally, they would be sunk by their own cheating).
