What do you think of these?
Grappling (revised)
There are three different ways to initiate a grapple from a standing position.
TACKLE- The grappler makes a CMB check vs. the CMD of the defender.
If the grappler fails: he falls prone, either in the square in front of the defender,or behind the defender (defender's choice).
If the grappler succeeds: both the grappler and the grappled are prone and have the grappled condition. The grappler may end the grapple as a free action...but is still prone.
GRAB- Only one free hand is required to perform a grab, doing so with both gives a +2 bonus.
If the grappler succeeds:The defender is considered entangled and must beat the grapplers CMD to end the effect. The grappler may end the effect as a free action.Nothing happens if the grappler fails.
RESTRAIN- Requires two free hands to perform.
If the Grappler succeeds: Both the grappler and the grappled are considered pinned, but the grappler may end this condition as a free action. He may choose to maintain the grapple, turn it into a grab,or simply let go.
If the grappler fails: The defender may attempt to grapple the attacker as an immediate Attack of opportunity.

Utter disinterest..duly noted.

If the Grappler succeeds on a TACKLE, and both the Grappler and Grappled
are prone, THEN begin a 'First to 3 Successes' contest.

'First to 3 Successes' contest:
At the beginning of *each round*, Grappler makes a CMB check vs. the CMD of the
Grappled. If the Grappler wins 3 checks first, then he has
succeeded in getting the Grappled in a rear-naked choke.
If the Grappled wins 3 checks first, he has successfully swept
the Grappled, and the positions are reversed -- at this point,
the *new* Grappler can begin another 'First of 3 Successes' contest,
or choose to stand up, in any adjacent 5' square leaving the other on the ground.

REAR-NAKED CHOKE - Grappled goes unconscious the next round.

You're taking a set of the rules that most people already have a hard time understanding, and you're basically adding more detail.

Also, how well does this port to giant spiders, serpents, squids, bears and so forth, that use very different appendages to grab?

I think we're better off with the more generic current system.

Yes.

Luckily this is a game of imagination, and you can do anything

you want to. However, in light of your first criticism, I understand
you suffer limitations.

Don't use my rules then. Win-Win. I don't have to explain them,

and you don't have to struggle.

Thanks for the responses.I intend to continue with further modifications, the end desired result would be for it to be simpler..or at least more intuitive.
I am a fan of MMA but I want to use the existing feats for as much as possible. Bonebreaker, neck breaker,etc..
I do see complications involving weird anatomies. For the tackle I would count any bonuses to being tripped as effective vs. tackling...additional legs, stability etc..I wouldn't recommend tackling OOOZES :)
This is just part one.I will post the rest as soon as I am done.
@Electric Wizard - That's interesting, but I'm not a fan of the three success thing..would it take 3 rounds? I want the grappling attacks to have immediate interesting effects. The way it works now no one in my game uses it,and I'd like to see more dynamic action.
Overall it always seemed strange to me that there is no tackle combat mechanic....it's a very common thing IRL.

Things to consider:

1) Tackle should be permitted at the end of a Charge.

2) Restrain, in lieu of using both hands, could utilize both legs as a leg-lock. There's probably some sort of penalty unless you have, say, Greater Grapple.

3) Creatures without grasping appendages can't "grab", but they can tackle or restrain.

Sounds good,Kazaan,it'll be +2 to CMB while performing a charging tackle.
Restrain with legs standing sounds tricky.
I'm working out the details of the MOUNTED condition, allowing the grappler to use both hands to attack the opponent on the ground.
Perhaps just allow a succesful grapple check to impose the grappled condition on the opponent while being considered unhindered oneself until the end of the turn.

Here's,I think...the rest.

ONCE GRAPPLED, the grappled creature may attempt to escape/take actions as their conditions dictate.
IF THE DEFENDER DOES NOT ESCAPE the condition persists. The grappler then has the option of Imposing a number of effects with a successful grapple check. They are as follows:
COMBAT MANEUVERS- The grappler may Bull rush,Drag,Dirty trick, reposition or trip using the grapple CMB to maintain the grapple to determine the outcome.Bonuses provided by the improved/greater maneuver feats stack.
MOUNT -The grappler may attack with both hands this turn,if he is Engaged in prone grappling he receives a +1 bonus higher ground bonus to hit.The defender is still considered grappled.
CHOKE/GOUGE- Allows the grappler to deal his unarmed damage while maintaining the grapple or pin.The particulars of chokes, armbars etc.. will be represented by the feats Bonebreaker,Neckbreaker and others from Ultimate combat.
