So, having recently reread the article on Shoanti from Curse of the Crismon Throne #4 (A History of Ashes), I noticed that it is heavily hinted that the Shoanti once served Thassalion.
There are two folklore stories written in that article. One of them is about how the Shoanti used to be the selected warriors of an ancient empire. But then the leaders of the empire were corrupted, and the Shoanti left to fend for themselves.
The second story is about how the seven (hmm, suspicious) tribes of the Shoanti won a great battle. The leaders of each tribe gathered and each lay a blade on the ground pointing to the leader of the tribe whom he thought contributed most to the battle. Each of them lay a weapon pointing at one of the others and when they were done, each leader had exactly one blade pointing at him - creating the shape of a seven pointed star (hmmm, very suspicious). One of their masters from the ancient empire saw what happened, and told them that this was the shape of victory.
So, did I stumble upon a conspiracy here? or just something that everyone else already figured out? or is it addressed somewhere officially?
I forget where it is mentioned but I believe the Shoanti were a caste of slave-warriors in the Thassalion that developed a unique culture after the Runelords went away.

I also remember this. As I recall, the Shoanti were a warrior caste and the Varisians were a worker caste.
I'm sure it's answered in print, but I also dug up this thread for you.
