I must state for the record that any reference to a specific game in the product tags or product groupings for this product has been added for organizational purposes by the online retailer, Paizo Inc. Legendary Games claims no affiliation with any other company and makes no reference to any specific roleplaying game in this product or its product description.

That said, if you were planning to pick up a new edition of a roleplaying game that is probably the best-known brand name in the industry, this adventure should work with it very well. :)

Well, that's hardly true. In your email promoting a sale of your Pathfinder-compatible products on a competing site, Legendary Games says the following:

"The only products not included are the two adventures we are releasing this GenCon for use with the 5th Edition of the world's most famous roleplaying game. There are no dungeons in them, nor dragons, but The Murmuring Fountain (5th Ed) and The Fiddler's Lament (5th Ed) both provide excellent 1st-level adventures with a delightful splash of horror and mystery. Grab your brand-new Basic Set or Player's Handbook and take your new 5th Edition characters for a spin in these darkling fantasy adventures from industry legends Greg Vaughan, Clark Peterson, and Jason Nelson!"

The only thing that was not done was spell out Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition directly, while referring to it as closely as possible, in every which way possible. You are at the very best being disingenuous, if not dishonest or worse.
The product may itself be good (hard to say, particularly as to its compatibility, as only the PHB and some Basic Rules have been released of D&D5E so far), but the promotion leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I'm glad to know this product exists.

But then, my taste may differ from yours.

You are apparently unaware that, being a legal trademark, they are NOT ALLOWED to bluntly say D&D unless licensed to do so by WOTC. They HAVE to use this sort of oblique, "disingenuous" language or they risk getting sued over an infringement of trademark.

Paizo, as a distributor, probably has the rights to use the D&D name and logos in advertisements for the stuff they sell. And even then, they play it safe by using terms like "X edition of world's most popular tabletop RPG", and having that big block of legalese text at the bottom of every page in tiny text saying "Y term is legal property of Z company" over and over and over.

Jason's just covering his legal rear end by pointing out that Paizo, who is very likely legally allowed to use the wording to some degree, added the D&D 5E wording to the title of this document's webpage, and not Legendary Games, who likely doesn't have that permission and would get their backsides sued off if WOTC got wind of them using the trademarked terminology without permission.

(We posters get away with it because A. we're not selling anything and thus not risking making money off WOTC's trademark, and B. because Paizo has a nice little disclaimer on their website saying "posts made by visitors on our forums are not necessarily the views of Paizo Inc." or some such, which gets them out of some legal binds that could be caused by people doing inappropriate stuff on the forum, and deleting certain posts that risk getting too close to the line, like talking about digital piracy stuff.)

They have to do the same with Paizo's trademarks. Legendary Games does a series called "Adventure Plug-ins" where they add side-quests, expansions, and other stuff to the APs. But they're not allowed to say "This can be added to [insert AP name here]" because Paizo has trademarked the AP names. So they have to be a little vague, but still obvious enough that people know what they're talking about. So instead of "Kingmaker", they say "kingdom-creating campaign". Instead of "Carrion Crown", they say "gothic adventure path". And so forth.

Now that you have been informed, it would be most polite of you to rescind your accusatory language. =)

Hi Wackyanne,

I posted a reply over on The Fiddler's Lament thread, but the same is true here, of course.

Then again, Orthos beat me to the punch and said pretty much everthing I did over there. I should've read this thread first and I could've pointed you to his explanation instead! :)

Thanks Orthos, and I hope you pick up the product and enjoy it Quiche Lisp.

Jason
