Archetype retraining - how to count features?

I'm planning to retrain my playtest Investigator into the Empiricist Archetype. She's level 6, with 4 levels of Investigator.

Here are the class features the Empiricist Archetype replaces by 4th level:

Quote:
Ceaseless Observation (Ex):...This ability replaces poison lore and poison resistance.
Quote:
Unfailing Logic (Ex): ...This ability replaces swift alchemy.

And here's the relevant retraining rule:

Quote:
To gain an archetype that replaces standard class abilities you already have, you must spend 5 days for every alternate class feature you would add, subtract, or replace by taking that archetype. At the end of the training period, you lose the standard class features and replace them with the archetype's alternate class features (if any).

(emphasis mine)

Since Ceaseless Observation replaces both Poison Lore and Poison Resistance, would that count as one class feature change or two? My assumption would be two, but the 'or' there is a little ambiguous.

I agree that Ceaseless Observation replacing both Poison Lore and Poison Resistance would count as two changes.

Effectively you're subtracting one and replacing the other.

Sounds about right. Thanks!

The text you quoted says 'every alternate class feature you add/subtract/replace'.

Poison Lore and Poison Resistance are not alternate class features are they? The first part of your quote refers to them as standard class abilities.

Sounds to me like you're just adding one alternate feature, by replacing two standard class features. And thus should only count as one change on the retraining radar.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 Seems legit.

Seriously though, if it specifies alternate class feature, it's the alternate class features that matter, not the features it's replacing, as far as the RAW goes.

Hmmm. Dissent.

I'll assume the conservative (costlier) interpretation until a consensus or clarification is found.
