Re: haunts and cleric command undead

Rules Questions

Silver Crusade

I have a quick question, how would the command undead feat for negative energy channelling interact with a haunt? How would the necromancy spell command undead work with a haunt? Thanks.

Liberty's Edge

I think they were clear, in the fact they stated it's fairly unclear, of the distinction of haunts and undead.

But they describe haunts more as traps than actual undead entities.

I would consider a haunt a trap, and not allow channelling to affect them, mostly. I supposed a specific haunt that was more of an undead ghostly thing than an actual trap might play out different. I think your asking to broad a question to get into a rules scenario though.

By the rules, neither would have any effect. The spell command undead, for example, specifies "one undead creature" and the haunt isn't a creature.

Regarding haunts, it's best to assume nothing works unless it specifies otherwise. There's a very limited range of options for dealing with them... which is part of what makes them scary.

For an example of an ability that does effect haunts, check out the geist in Bestiary 4.

Cheers!

Yep. Haunts are not creatures. They're not even technically undead, though they have undead flavor and some vague undead qualities (harmed by positive energy) and sometimes even manifest an undead-like creature.

Haunts are Haunts.

This does raise a secondary issue, what occurs when command is used on a tethered undead such as an apparition, trap spirit, or ghost?

Silver Crusade

There are two ways I know of to deal with Haunts.

The first is positive energy.

The second is a Haunt Syphon which uses positive energy. That's it.

I'm looking for other ways to deal with haunts.

What would a disrupt undead cantrip do to a haunt?...Its 1d6 of positive energy damage.

I guess i am just looking for more then one way to deal with haunts......

:

I am asking because a friend of mine is thinking of running a carrion crown campaign starting

with the Haunting of Harrow stone. The GM knows that we have played through Haunting

before. I guess what we really want is to get through the rest of the campaign. In the last

campaign I played through with a Dhampire oracle with the life mystery and the haunted curse.

The character worked out well for haunting of harrowstone. While yes, I could again play a

positive energy channeler, a cleric, a shaman......to make sure our party has a means to deal

with these haunts.....but I would like to try a different approach.

This will be a home campaign that doesn't have to follow Raw....any suggestions?

I'm looking for some ideas to present to the GM before the campaign starts.

Landon thank you, the Geist may present a president for working out a way to actually control

a haunt with negative energy. This might be something I could present to the GM.

Thanks.

RAW-wise you have one option for most Haunts: Positive Energy. That is, if you want to temporarily disable it, instead of just getting out of its area of influence.

Haunts are not really meant to be fought, with the exception of the 5 Haunts in HoH you must defeat to proceed, and all but one of those has other ways you can harm it.
