Escape from old korvosa

Curse of the Crimson Throne

I was wondering what level the PC's should be when starting this module. My group ended up skipping a few encounters and they are just about at the end of seven days to the grave and they are level 4. I searched the module for a level range but could not find it

Thanks in advance

I don't have the book in front of my right now but in general Book one is 1-4, Book 2 is 5-7 so your PCs should be level 7, almost 8 if they are done Seven Days to the Grave.

That AP was done in 3.5 and so XP is a bit different. If they are handling encounters ok I would not worry about it since Pathfinder PCs are a bit more powerful then 3.5. Otherwise just grant a story XP bonus and keep going.

Mine started this one at level 6, I believe, and it worked out just fine. Party of 5, 15 point buy, builds are not optimized. Being in a city campaign, there are hundreds of ways to get XP for your PCs, assuming you all tally it up. Lots of great ideas on this message board sub-forum, in fact, so if you take a bit to peruse what others have done it's well worth the time. Being that the characters are in the middle of a city in need of help after riots/plagues/bad nasty things, it's easy to find them something to do or someone to help out. And if you're stuck, send them away from the city for a bit of fresh air only to find things even worse off when they get back from adventure vacation...

For instance, my characters went through the Academy of Secrets (adjusted for level, of course) just before the events of EfoK.

Spoiler:
The results were great! I figured a new angle would be that Queen Ileosa, accepting that these heroes are starting to become a serious thorn in her side (and I had played up the political aspects, which my players really got into, and at this point they hadn't quite accepted Ileosa was the bad guy she was being made out to be), Ileosa thought personally inviting the party to take part in the notoriously lethal gauntlet would be a great, politically-neutral way to get rid of them.

The people will love seeing their new flavor of champion sent off to do what hasn't been done in over a century, and if(WHEN!) they die to whatever the heck those wizards have planned she gets to have a terribly moving ceremony eulogizing these brave heroes. She is a pretty high level bard, so that always helps in getting attention and convincing everyone.

Alternatively, you can just forge right on ahead and things shouldn't be too rough if you can get the party to around level 6, 5 at the minimum, and just use the stat blocks as written. Like Vaellen said above, 3.5 encounters are in general a bit weaker than the Pathfinder equivalent because of the power level difference in base and core classes.

Hope that helps! CotCT is a great AP, probably my favorite, and it really adapts well to a DM and a party that like to utilize the fact that it's primarily a city campaign with plenty of room for intrigue.

I use the level of the pregenerated characters found at the end of the books to guage what level the player's characters should be when they begin that book.

I think the pregenerated characters in Esxape From Old Korvosa all begin at level 7.

Correct.

Just in case anyone's wondering, the older APs have the information for party level on the "splash page," where the credits are, opposite the Table of Contents. It's in, like, size 5 font, so it's easy to miss. EfoK is "designed for four 7th-level characters. By the end of this adventure, characters should ready 10th level."
