Magic Item Creation

Rules Questions

Just a simple question... I am not asking about a character creating and item, I am asking about designing new items.

But for an example, magic weapon creation.
If I want a Returning Throwing Axe, what do I need?

From what I can figure out, I need a Throwing Axe (duh).

A Throwing Axe +1 cost 2000 plus the cost of the axe.

Returning ability counts as a +1 enhancement, and a +1 enhancement costs 2000.

Can I make a Returning Throwing Axe for 2000 + axe without the +1...

...or do I have to make a Throwing Axe +1 and then add the Returning ability for a total cost of 8000 + axe?

A returning axe needs to be at least +1... And the axe needs to be masterwork before it can be enchanted, so the price would be:
Throwing Axe cost
Masterwork weapon (300 gp)
+1 Enhancement and Returning (8000 gp).

To explain how he got to 8k.

+1 is a +1 enhancement
Returning is a +1 enhancement

Add those together and get a total of +2 enhancement.

The rule is 2000 gp * enhancement squared, so 2000 gp * 2^2= 2000 gp * 4 = 8000gp.

Alternately, the table here shows that a +2 enhancement costs 8000 gp.

A magic weapon (And for that matter, magic armor and magic shields) must be +1 before any special properties are added.

You can't have just a Returning Throwing Axe. At the very least, it must be a +1 Returning Throwing Axe.

And, for the rules citation:

Quote:
Some magic weapons have special abilities. Special abilities count as additional bonuses for determining the market value of the item, but do not modify attack or damage bonuses (except where specifically noted). A single weapon cannot have a modified bonus (enhancement bonus plus special ability bonus equivalents, including those from character abilities and spells) higher than +10. A weapon with a special ability must also have at least a +1 enhancement bonus. Weapons cannot possess the same special ability more than once.

PFFFT! You are such a nerd! Who needs rules citations, what? Just because we are in a rules forum you think that is necessary? :P
