so with me starting a tetori monk in pfs, i have to ask myself, whats really important to have starting out at level 1?
i ask because in the games we played in my homegroup, many factors of items brought were sometimes...looked over. it was usually just assumed you brought rations and really only came into play if we were going to be out in the wilderness for extended periods for example.

I find that this thread has some incredibly useful advice, separated by level, of what you should plan on having to deal with, which should help you with what kinds of gear to pick up.
One of the big ones at first level is being able to deal with swarms; they don't come up that often, but they when they do, you absolutely must have an answer. If you're not a spellcaster with AoE spells, you should definitely pick up some form of alchemical splash weapon to use on them.
Beyond that, I usually look at the class kits from Ultimate Equipment for a starting point; most of the gear won't come into play (like a mess kit), but you really probably should have on you for RP reasons, if nothing else.

Jiggy wrote:Pants (optional) - 0gpI disagree to the "optional" part; all characters start with a free outfit that costs 10gp or less, all of which include pants, so starting with pants is most certainly NOT optional.
What you do with those pants afterwards, though...
wait... my starting outfit didn't include pants!
Entertainer's outfit...."This set of flashy—perhaps even gaudy—clothes is for entertaining. While the outfit looks whimsical, its practical design lets you tumble, dance, walk a tightrope, or just run (if the audience turns ugly)."
no pants....

i should have probably noted now that i think about it.
i only have "core assumption" and ultimate combat to work with
While you may not own UE, and thus cannot buy the kits themselves, you can still use the class kits (which you can find in the PRD) as suggestions of what kinds of things to consider buying, as they're mostly made up of items from the CRB (which you CAN buy), plus a few non-essential extras like mess kits and iron pots.
