Rise of the Runelords

Hey!

The heroic anti-heroes of Varisia have returned from Hook Mountains to Magnimar and being the gold hungry mercenaries as they are, they talked themselves in to quite a bit of coin and are now spending a week of time enchanting their weapons at a local mage tower.

They are very aware of the threat of Sandpoint, but rather than go look for them self, they are asking around at docs if anyone knows latest news of Sandpoint.

I have had them make character sheets for Sandpoint locals (I let them choose their favorites) and I am now thinking if I should let them experience the raid through those characters alone, should I wait for the PCs to make it to Sandpoint or have a some sort of tip for the players that if they go now, they can make it but if they wait they wait a full week then they might be late.

I know similar topics have been rased before and I've read them, yet I still fail to make up my mind on it.

This session is due in 2 hours and I haven't decided what is the situation in Sandpoint.

I'd let them have their shopping trip, especially after Hook mountain! after that adventure i would be surprised if they didn't find a therapist after all the haevy shit they see up there!
nice thing is a large party of giants using stealth takes awhile getting from point A to point B:)
i do think not letting them experience the raid themselves is a bad idea as it is an iconic moment of the entire adventure path (plus if Longtooth shows up they will be pissed they didnt get to fight him themselves)
good fighting!

It would normally have taken 2 weeks to travel by land, 1 by river. The assualy it set to happen just after they get to Sandpoint. So, if they travelled by water, 1 week in magnimar is not too much to ask for.

A week or 2 no problem. If they are taking 60 days off from the plot to craft items let the world continue and destroy Sandpoint while they are away they should be aware that there are things going on around them and taking a holiday is pushing metagaming (the GM won't have anything bad happen while we are away , Pah!)

Cheers for the input fellows! I followed your trail of thoughts and it worked out great. The PCs made their way to Sandpoint over the week one by one (they figured splitting the party between two towns is fine) and when the giants finally hit the fan, the party was in Sandpoint general area, but no one in same place.

Of the first arrivals one settled in at his newly found Temple of Iomedae while another stayed at Rusty Dragon. At the morning of the raid, they were at opposite end of the village tending to their personal matters.

One went out to scout, but followed road all the way to Nettlewood and missed the giants lurking along the shore. He woke up the next morning to a roar of the Longtooth that was flying over the forest. He made it barely back to finish the mocking giants at North gate. Around round 20.

Last arrival was a new member of the group, girl from the Streets of Magnimar who had never been to Sandpoint and had had no one tell her where to find rest of the group, so she took residence at Fatman's Feedbag the night of her arrival and woke up late when the city was already in middle of chaos. Around round 10.

So they got to experience the raid in it's full chaos while never fighting in same place together, but instead experiencing situations through the NPC's and plenty of redshirt-guards.

My party was doing exactly what yours was. Relaxing in Sandpoint. I had the PCs run NPCs in the town, for some interesting results. They managed to chase off Longtooth after he set half of the town on fire, and Amieko (run by my wizard) managed to soe chaos among the giants at the south end of town. But, in the end, the raid was very successful and the party was left to clean up the mess and deal with a very angry Sandpoint.

Sounds like yours went off fairly well, though. At least you didn't have to basically rebuild the town and repopulate. A lot of NPCs died in my raid.
