Purchasing Pathfinder...

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

I am still learning exactly how HUGE the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game is. I recently bought the base set, Rise of the Runelords. As i was cruising through this site and learning more, on one of the first pages i came to was a long list of campaigns. Here are my questions.

1-Are these campaigns independent from each other? I play Harsk in ROTRL. When that is wrapped up after the 6th adventure deck am i done with him? Which brings me to my second question.

2-Is the next campaign in the lineup, Curse of the Crimson Throne, another base set i must purchase, with its own characters and such, or is it simply the first of another set of adventure decks i must purchase.

3-As i look down the list of campaigns i see 15, each with 6 adventures. I am just looking for clarification as i would like to keep my character as well as purchase and play the adventures in order.

Rise of the Runelords
Curse of the Crimson Throne
Second Darkness
Legacy of Fire
Council of Thieves
Kingmaker
Serpent's Skull
Carrion Crown
Jade Regent
Skull & Shackles
Shattered Star
Reign of Winter
Wrath of Righteous
Mummy's Mask
Iron Gods

The next campaign is Skull & Shackes. Yes, campaigns are independent from each other, with a separate base set for each campaign. Characters do not carry over from one campaign to another. I'm hoping they will eventually release high-level second campaigns for our veteran characters, but I'm not holding my breath.

I'd just like to add that the list of campaigns you are looking at is for the Pathfinder RPG not the Adventure Card Game. So for the card game only Rise of the Runelords has been made. Skull & Shackles is the next adventure path, as said above, and that will be released next month.

Let's answer #2 first. Yes, the first set is Rise of the Runelords and it is patterned after the PFRPG Adventure Path of the same name.

But the second set coming out in a month is based on Skull & Shackles not Curse of the Crimson Throne. The next coming out sixth months after that is based on Wrath of the Righteous.

You'll see them abbreviated as RotR, S&S and WotR.

The sets are not going to come out in the same order as the Adventure Paths in PFRPG.

Now, #3. Don't worry about the order of the sets/characters as I said, they won't follow the RPG adventure path order. And yes, each adventure path of the PACG (Pathfinder Adventure Card Game) will contain 6 adventure decks corresponding to the chapters of the RPG adventure path. And each adventure deck (so far) contains 5 scenarios.

Now back to #1. Yes, at this time, the adventure paths are separate. When you are done with Harsk (and others) in RotR, you will be retiring them. And start fresh with new characters (and classes) in S&S. You'll find the 11 iconic classes in RotR (with the add-on deck). However, in S&S, only the Fighter, Bard, Rogue and Druid (in the add-on) will be there. The rest of the classes are from the Advanced Players Guide, Advanced Class Guide (coming out in a month) and the Ultimate Magic books. The mechanics in S&S will be a bit different than RotR where we will be able to use ships for movement as well as other skills and powers. The designers are expecting us to start fresh characters with S&S as the old ones will be just too powerful for the new set.

Hope this helps.

Oh, and there is an alternate scenario set that will be coming out at the same time as S&S premiering. There will be PFSACG (Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild). It is part of the Pathfinder Society and is considered Organized Play just like the PFS RPG scenarios. They will use the same cards as the S&S base set, add-on and adventure decks. However, they will be alternate scenarios coming out weekly from Paizo. You'll be able to use class decks (purchased through Paizo and distributors) to keep your character and move him/her from game to game. Similar to what you do with a PFS character.

There's more info on this site if you're interested.

csouth and inultus thanks so much! You have made it clearer now. theryon, you too, thanks so much for all the info. I love how helpful these forums and pathfinder fans have been! This has been great. I do have some follow up questions somewhat related to this topic.

1-The base set came with several characters and there is also a character add-on deck to provide 4 more. I would assume this would allow an 11 player adventure. However, as i read the rulebook it mentions topping out at 6. Is there a point to purchasing the add-ons if you cant play a large group together?

2-On top of that add-on deck there are class decks coming out. Again whats the point of extra characters?

3-If a person were to purchase all of these items anyways, would they even be able to fully fit in the box? lol dumb question but i had to ask now seeing all that is to be purchased for RotR.

Thanks so much for taking time to answer a noob's questions!

The Character Add-on Deck servers three distinct and seperate purposes.

A. It allows you to play with 5 or 6 players at a time (the Base Set is limited to 4 maximum).
B. It gives you 4 additional choices for characters to play.
C. It has some unique boons that don't appear in the Base Set. Deathbane Light Crossbow +1 and Sabertooth Tiger are two examples.

The class decks are primarily for Organized Play. That is where you can go to a store and play with people you may or may not know. One person will need to have a Base Set, and every player will need a class deck. Your class deck will be your character card and all your character deck. That way, when you leave after Organized Play, you take your character home with you without taking someone else's cards.

They also give you lots of other choices for characters because you can play them in any Adventure Path. Characters have different powers and skills and deck lists, so playing a different character can be a very different experience. So class decks also give you lots more choices for any adventure path.

The Base Set box is designed to hold the Base Set, the Character Add-on Deck, and all 6 Adventure Decks for that particular adventure path. They won't hold cards if you add in a class deck, though they'd probably hold a few extra characters.

To start, all you need is the RotR base set (and character add-on deck). To continue the RotR story, buy the subsequent adventure decks. (Deck 1 comes in the Base Set package.) You can buy the class decks at any time if you want to have more character options or do organized play.

Note that there have been two printings of RotR. I'd recommend getting the second printing. Paizo is selling the second printing of all parts of RotR.

Amazing. I am out of questions, so its time to go back to the table and play some more. Thanks so much, again guys!
