Exotic Weapon Special Abilities

If I do not have a proficiency with an exotic weapon can I still use the abilities listed under "special?"

For example, if I do not have a proficiency with a whip can I still use its disarm, reach, and trip abilities?

Yes, but any thing you do with it suffers the -4 non proficiency penalty, including combat maneuvers.

And, of course, it still provokes when used adjacent.

And won't do damage in a lot of circumstances.

the only malus of not having proficiency with a weapon is a -4 on all attack rolls using it.

Cool. I assume the exception is for things like the Bastard Sword or Grappling hook that actually call out the need for proficiency to use an ability.
