Familiar aiding an archer

Rules Questions

Dark Archive

I have an archer who has a familiar and I was wondering if there is any way to give the archer a bonus by having it fly around the target's face (aid another's attack). I know it endangers the familiar, but I love the role playing aspects of sending the familiar out to distract an opponent.

Can I use it to aid the archer''s attack? I believe I saw a post about this somewhere? In rereading the aid another in combat, I noticed that it specifically pertains to melee attacks.

Any thoughts on this?

RAW

In melee combat, you can help a friend attack or defend by distracting or interfering with an opponent. If you're in position to make a melee attack on an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee combat, you can attempt to aid your friend as a standard action. You make an attack roll against AC 10. If you succeed, your friend gains either a +2 bonus on his next attack roll against that opponent or a +2 bonus to AC against that opponent's next attack (your choice), as long as that attack comes before the beginning of your next turn.

The Exchange

The 'Falconer' Ranger archetype has the Distract (birds only) animal trick listed under its Feathered Companion class feature which causes the enemy to become shaken on a successful melee attack roll from the bird (instead of the normal attack), if that helps at all?

As far as I am aware, you pretty much have it right.

I will warn this- make sure that it has at least a 5' reach (tiny familiars usually don't have this). Otherwise, it will have to get into the opponent's square in order to do all of this...which draws all sorts of dangers.
