7th level animal companions for medium characters

Since wolf is one of the basic mounts, can, at level 7, a medium character playing a mount class (cavalier, mounted fury barbarian, paladin, etc.) take the large wolf in PFS? And, if not, can we work toward a fix if this was simply an oversight in the rules?

Unless the class specifically says that they can, they cannot.

Reading that i'm leaning pretty heavily towards no. I can't see the line starting at first level" meaning anything else.

A wolf is not a valid mount for a Medium standard cavalier or paladin. This is not a general rule for "pet classes", so check the text for the class you want to play.

You wanna ride something other than a horse, you say? Dragoon Fighter 4 + Druid or Hunter class levels and proper feat/skill setup makes you able to ride almost any animal companion. I ride my Giant Wasp into battle with my +1 Shocking Holy Adamantine Lance all the time. Don't forget about the rules on not advancing the size category of your animal companion, if you are small.

The base Cavalier and most of its archetypes cannot select a wolf as a mount, but a 7th level Beast Rider can.

There are no Paladin archetypes that I am aware of that can select a wolf as a mount.

If you're a Druid, or a Ranger, or a Sylvan Sorcerer, go nuts.

I'm sure there's at least a couple other methods out there as well.
