Our group has just completed the main quest line of Blood for Blood (we have most of the exploring to do), so we're going to be hitting book 5 shortly.
As we know that war is coming, the group is starting to raise their armies in preparation.
However, I can't find any details on the maximum number of armies, or maximum army sizes based on our kingdom size.
For example, our kingdom size is 70 hexes, with a combined population of 28,500 in all of the towns & cities (17,750 in the capital). At the moment, between all of our castles, forts, watchtowers etc, we have 900 soldiers, with a maximum single army size of 200 in the capital).
Obviously we can raise more than 10 soldiers, but we can't have 100 gargantuan armies running about.
So what is the limit? Book of the River Kingdoms (I know it's not official & Ultimate Campaign is newer etc) states for 70 hexes, the maximum army size is 500. So is that per army, or in total for the entire kingdom?
Or can you simply keep recruiting until you can't afford the BP to keep them?
It's all a bit vague...

If you are just using UC, there are no restrictions on army size, total # of armies, etc.
If you are using Jason Nelson's expansions from Legendary Games called Ultimate Rulership and Ultimate Battle, there are restrictions. In case you didn't know, Jason wrote the Mass combat rules for both the AP and I believe UC.
Ultimate Rulership has guidelines for total # of soldiers in all armies being a percentage of total kingdom population. The more peaceful a kingdom, the lower the percentage, the more warlike (like Sparta) the larger the percentage. I think I recall the average being 10%.
What is cool about this is that Ultimate Battle provides rules where destroyed armies count against the total # of soldiers available for one year. This provides a logical reason why kingdoms hire mercenaries from a mechanical viewpoint, since mercs don't count against the total # for a kingdom.
In addition, there is a maximum # of different armies able to be commanded in a kingdom which is based on the Kingdom Loyalty score and modified various ways.
If you are considering this level of detail, I highly recommend both of these expansions. I bought both of them and they are indispensable and I have no idea how the were not added into UC. In particular, I cannot see doing any mass combat without using Ultimate Battle rules. Abacus vs a PC, its that big a difference. I would consider getting them both, I think you will like them.
