Shadow Lodge

When can you play Cape of Escape? Can you do it on someone else's turn?

If you're playing a card which gets "revealed" and another power which requires discarding a card, can you discard the revealed card? (Merisiel playing a dagger, then discarding it for her +2d6 power).

You can play Cape of Escape on any character's turn any time between the start of the turn and before the "Reset Your Hand" part of the turn, except during another character's encounter.

And yes, you can reveal a card and then use the revealed card to pay the cost of another power.

Got another one!

So, if a Barrier has a check whose text box looks like this:

PERCEPTION
WISDOM

Can a character with a d8 Wisdom but no Perception skill use an Ally who adds "1d10 to your Perception check" roll 1d8+1d10? Or do they roll 1d4+1d10 since they don't have Perception?

Grand Lodge

I think it's the second one. If you don't have perception, you use a d4. An ally (like a Dog) that gives you a bonus to perception will add whatever die, such as d10, to the d4 you already have, but it won't modify your base die for that skill (you still don't have it and are using the d4, but now there's an added d10).

Seems a bit weird that someone whose Wisdom is 1d8+4 would have a disadvantage for using an ally to help them pass the check. In the RPG, all skills (like Perception) are keyed to an ability score (like Wisdom), but that distinction doesn't apply to the ACG.

Doug Maynard is correct.

Not a subtle distinction though. The Snake adds to a Melee check. If Lini plays a Melee weapon, she is making a Melee check due to the trait on the weapon. She can still roll her strength die (and even use her power to increase it to a d10) and still use the Snake as long as she is playing a weapon.

The same thing would apply to Valeros playing a Longbow and an Archer ally. The weapon makes the check a "Ranged check."

In other words saying "x check" is basically saying either trait or skill can define the type of check.

Correct, but you'll notice that certain skills are not necessarily keyed to the same stat depending on the character. Most notably Arcane and Divine, which are keyed to whichever stat that character uses for casting in the RPG.

So an ally that adds 1d10 to a Perception check is only helpful to a character who either (1)has really terrible Wisdom and no Perception OR (2)has Perception already.

In the case of 1, you'll find that most Perception checks are Wisdom/Perception checks. If you're rolling a d4 either way due to terrible Wisdom, you might as well get a 1d4+1d10.
