Army Movement

Advice

Okay, so i'm going to start by saying i'm quite noobish still when it comes to being a GM so i'm sorry if i just ask stupid questions, that being said. I basically need to move a party of three ( Level 6 Fighter, and two Wizards)through a wood which has an army. Which sounds simple enough, they haven't done anything in particular to anger the army but it mostly consists of sellswords and due to previous actions they've lost their pay. So i ideally need a way to have banditry going crazy amongst them while causing trouble for my party as well. But they'll need an escape also in case they get in too deep, and i've sort of hit a brick wall.

Any help is appreciated.

I'd suggest throwing together a random encounter table that represents a disgruntled army spread throughout a forest, make them roll skill checks to avoid an encounter for every interval of travel.

They could stumble across a group of sell-swords that try holding them up, or a group willing to help them negotiate through the woods for a small fee (circumstantial bonus on skill checks, circumventing the biggest threats). I'd also have a few guards through out the woods. If the party passes the stealth check, the guard is oblivious, if they try diplomacy, maybe the guard helps them, if they threaten the guard, maybe he calls his buddies.

You probably don't want your 3 PCs trying to fight an army all at once, so just give the sense that the place is saturated with soldiers, but they aren't necessarily all threatening. Now of course, anytime morale is low in an army camp, divisive factions form, maybe the PCs can get assistance from one, while the other group is a bit more hostile? If they play their cards right, they may be able to get by with minimal harm, but if they misstep, they could bring a world of hurt down.

Are the woods well traveled with paths and roads through them? If so, maybe the bandity soldiers set up tolls. You could look into the chase mechanics to represent a platoon of soldiers running them down.

Another thing to consider is what the troops may want out of the PCs. Are they looking to ease their tension with a good fight? Would they try kidnapping them to hold for ransom, or just spilling their guts and taking their stuff?

Nice, i like the ideas. The roads are pretty well traveled, more a well kept highway with other hunting trails. I don't know why, but in my head i couldn't picture any of the soldiers being helpful, but when i think about it like that it adds a lot more potential. I'm considering splitting the group into three, say one that's after a fight, one for coin and one trying to keep some standing of honor.

Another thing could be dependent on their actions, say sneaking past some guards could result in those guards hunting down trespassers so they don't look bad. I figured i could make it less, fight after fight after fight, and turn it more into a diplomatic minefield to keep them thinking.

The random encounter table is a genius idea, it'll take a lot of the pressure off, so i'll definitely be doing that one. Thank you.
