While helping the players make more personal connections with the townsfolk of Ravengro, one of my PCs was deputized by Caeller, well before Gibs slaughters him.
The plan is to have that PC become the new sheriff after Gibs' attack. Other than having to abandon ship later when they head off to Lepidstadt, does anyone see any problems with this?

Aw my players made a side adventure playing cupid with the sherif and the alchemist. During the adventure the PCs stopped by the shop and spotted the sherif standing outside. They thought the sherif suspected them of something. Slowly they learned he actually has a crush on the alchemist. It was a real rewarding red herring.
As for your adventure you could try another approach. Have Gibs wound the sherif terribly, to the point he is bed ridden hanging onto his life. The PC can become an interim sherif in the meanwhile. Once the PCs wrap up the adventure the sherif has recovered enough to resume his old role and the PC will be free to move onto Lepistadt.

Pan's idea works well, as you certainly don't want the PC to feel obligated to stay in Ravengro.

Once Gibbs is dealt with and the Sheriff is bed-ridden, you could have the Splattermna step up his game by using the Sheriff's body. Have his caretakers find bloody letters written on his sheets and anywhere else that he can reach, or have him suddenly wake up and engage the PCs, only in the Splatterman's voice.
