new to PFS questions

Pathfinder Society

Hi all:

Sorry for the newbie-ish questions, but I've read over all of the material I can find, and I'm still a bit confused about a few things. I was hoping if I asked it may clear it up for me, and maybe be grep-able for future people with the same confusion.

I've played exactly 2 games within PFS so far, for context.

1. I've seen mention in many places that a chronicle sheet can only be applied to 1 character. But, some chronicle sheets seem to contain boons that can only be applied to a new character (ie, the text concerning the advanced race guide states that you can only play an aasimar, tengu, or tiefling without a boon - implying you could get something on a chronicle sheet that would let you play another race with a new character). Does the experience for that chronicle sheet apply to the current character but the boon apply to the new character? Or, if I want to use that boon, do I need to save that sheet to use only with the new character?

1a. Am I getting the terminology right? Hopefully I am....

2. Respec can happen before you reach 2nd level. Is there anything that cannot be respec'd? Looking at my society ID, I apparently played a character named "Pregen" (maybe there were too many "Kyra"s already....) in the Grand Lodge last year at Origins, that seems to be my official character now on my society card. I'd like to play again at Origins this year, but maybe with a different name, and in a different lodge. Is that allowed? Would I start with 0 fame if I'm in a different lodge, or is that covered in the respec?

3. With two scenarios played with pregen characters, I have some money that I could spend beyond the starting gold. If I am doing a total respec of my character (I like Kyra, but don't want to play her....), can I sum up all that money and use it as my starting cash?

4. If I understood the chronicle sheets correctly, I can always buy certain items (ie mundane gear). Do I just do that in between sessions, or do I need to have a GM around to audit it all? (I assume the sheets make everything auditable, but I didn't know if I needed to have it recorded on a chronicle sheet if I bought a wayfinder for instance).

1. Things like race boons you don't usually get through playing a scenario. Those are generally GM rewards or won at conventions. Therefore, a single chronicle sheet can only be applied to one character. (Hope I explained that clearly enough.)
Basically, not all chronicle sheets come from completing scenarios. Some are rewards, holiday boons, boons such as from owning a copy of a Pathfinder Tales novel, etc.

2. You can change anything about your character (race, faction, name, class, stats, etc) before playing it at level 2. So you can absolutely change the name, and you'd have the same fame/prestige if you switch factions.

3. Absolutely. Personally, I like to put a GM credit chronicle on a character before I play him or her for the first time just so I don't have to start with scale mail.

4. You can buy it between sessions. Just make sure to notate anything over 25g on your inventory tracking sheet, and account for it on your next chronicle. Show your GM your ITS, get him or her to initial your total under "items bought," and you're good. Tends to save time during the session that way. Also remember that you must include items under 25g bought on your chronicle sheet, you just don't have to individually spell them out on your ITS.

Does that answer your questions?

Greetings topherhughes! Welcome to Society =)

You have quite a few questions, and I'm sure several people will ninja me as I type these out.

1) Sometimes. The "Chronicle Sheet" is the actual piece of paper the GM hands you at the end of the scenario, but sometimes they contain "Boons", which is a blurb of text that grants that character something special. One Boon may give that character a +1 Diplomacy when dealing with NPCs, another may give that character +1 when attacking giants.

That sort of thing.

But there are other Chronicle Sheets known themselves solely as "Boons", such as "Race Boons". These are Sheets you may acquire via Blogs, online events, from purchasing a book, or from playing at a Convention. For example, if you attend an upcoming Convention, you may win a Race Boon that will open up the Sylph as a playable race. The Boon is in the form of a Chronicle Sheet, and it would need to be your first Chronicle Sheet (#1) for your Sylph character.

Some other Chronicle Sheet Boons may be applied to other characters entirely, but they will always call that out, such as "All of your Pathfinder Society characters may use spells from The Demon Hunter's Handbook", or something similar.

2) You may change anything about your character before you play above level 1, including name and Faction. If the name you see online is "Pregen", or "Kyra", don't sweat it. In fact, names can be changed at anytime. The only thing set in stone always is your character #, and Faction (unless you switch Factions, which requires procedure).

3) Yes. Anything you purchase with gold before you play above level 1 may be refunded 100%. You could play your 1st game, with 150gp, as a Barbarian wearing Hide armor and wielding a Greataxe. By your 2nd game you could have sold all of that equipment back at full price and spent ~650gp on a Cleric, and by your 3rd game you could start with ~1150gp on a Rogue. Only after you play a game above 1st level are you set in stone.

4) Just be sure to write down everything on your Inventory Tracking Sheet. A GM need not sign off on it. We're pretty much on an honor system, although you may be audited at some point, whether by GM whim or the occasional scenario which calls for it.

Hope that helps!

Thank you all for the answers! I'm hoping to appear semi-competent (coherent is another matter entirely apparently) when I play next.

Luckily for you we've all been there, and most people are happy to help. The game I sat at last night had two brand new players as well, and everyone at the table was super helpful throughout the session and afterwards. Hopefully your experiences will be the same.

No worries, Topherhughes. I started playing about a year ago, and I'm only here for the people. If the people I started playing with (as a complete newbie) weren't so awesome and friendly a year ago, I wouldn't be playing today.
