The ACG is scheduled for preorders at some point in August. At present the playtest versions of characters are legal. When the ACG is released however I assume those characters will need to be updated to the release version and you will also need to own the book.

I am tempted to make an Arcanist for use during part of Gencon but don't really want to put the time into it and find the rules for it change significantly for Gencon. Is there any indication of whether or not the actual book will be released by then. Does open for pre-order mean an actual pre-order release date or just when they start to accept pre-orders?

The actual book will be available at Gencon, but not before.

If you are a subscriber, you can pick up your subscription copy at Gencon.

Dark Archive 4/5 **

PDFs should be available before GenCon for subscribers, so you should be able to update the character with any changes from the playtest version prior to the con. My Ultimate Combat PDF was added to my account in July 2011, I picked up the book at the con, so I would assume they will do something similar.

If you are just building it for GenCon, the first level rebuild rule should still be an option. You can bring the fighter as a back up. :) I think there usually is a little leeway in the book release date and rebuild deadline too.

So does anyone know what the exact release date is for the 'Advanced Class Guide' yet? I'm thinking it might be Thursday 14 August; but I'm hoping to see some confirmation on that.

Furthermore: Suppose the release date is the 14th. Further suppose I order the ACG from, say for example, 'Barnes & Nobles' on-line. Is the 14 August the day I can order it, or the day it arrives via the 'US Postal Service' (or UPS or whatever they use) at my house?

I think it's usually midnight PST the first day of Gencon. Might be wrong on that though.

Unless a company has a special deal going, they won't ship until after the release date. Amazon in particular has a bad track record for delivering Paizo hardcovers around launch time, I'm not sure about B&N.

This is what I am currently trying to figure out. I have a Swashbuckler 3, but I don't know if I should count on being able to use it at GenCon. Does anyone know if on Thursday (first day of GenCon proper) we'll need to have the ACG and a fully updated character, or if there will be a grace period to play versions based on the Playtest guide?

If things go as they have with playtest characters in books coming out in the past, you will need to have the character updated to the new book rules on the street date for the new product. In this case, on the first day of GenCon.

If you subscribe to the hardcover line, you can tell them you'd like to pick up your subscriptions at Gen Con. Not sure about preorders.

But to answer your question, yes you will need the book to play your character at gen con.

You can buy it at Gen Con I'm assuming as well.
