Spitting fire: how could that work out

Homebrew and House Rules

So, I was watching Xena, warrior princess a while back, and one of the cooler things she did was take a swig of oil, spit it over her torch and basically create a cone of fire. I was thinking it might be cool to include that as a homebrew rule somehow. My question is how? One way would be a feat:

Firespitter:
Requirements: Con 16
You can spit fire. While you hold a torch, you can, as a standard action, drink one unit of flamable liquid (a bottle of oil, a bottle of spirits). You can then spit it out into a 15-feet cone in front of you, doing 2d4 damage to all within the cone.

Is this too much? Are such things too crazy? I just thought it was kinda cool, so I was wondering what others might think.

It's smarter than axe-chucks, but, I kind of like it. Don't forget a reflex save for half. Maybe add Endurance as a prereq?

Endurance might be a decent pre-req (so that you dont burn your mouth). I dont think reflex would be necessary though.

I mean a save for the other guys.

Yes! Yes! Although maybe the saves should be based on your skill... like

DC=10+1/2 bab + con (for lung strength) as a reflex save for half.

That sounds like a plan, isn't that the formula for a dragons breath weapon? There should be a feat chain for this, in fact. Maybe it could even end up as a half-viable tactic? For example, one that lets you create an obscuring, choking cloud of smoke, and another-much later I'd imagine-that lets you skip an ingredient or two.

First of, set the constitution requirement to an odd number, such as 15.

You should devise a rough system for anyone to breath fire, with good risk of burning them selves. Then you your should devise what a feat does. Alchemy should fit in somewhere too. A specially crafted, low DC, low cost liquid would be safer for the user, and could be used several times.

For example, anyone can breath fire and deal 1d6 fire damage in a 10 ft line/AoE. Rolling a natural 5 or less means you have burned yourself (save for half). Using an improvised liquid means you hurt your self on a 10 or less. With the feat, the damage and AoE is increased, and you cannot hurt your self at all, unless you use an improvised liquid and roll a 1. Then you could have a second feat to kick it up a step.

Sczarni

I'm pretty sure there are rules for this in one of the free modules

Spoiler:
We Be Goblins Too! has:
Gourd of Fire Burping
Price 250 gp
Aura faint evocation
CL 4th
Slot none
Weight —
A lesser version of the elixir of fire breath, a gourd of fire burping can be imbibed as a normal elixir or, in the case of a user with a large enough mouth and low enough standards, be completely consumed in one crunchy gulp. Once the user has consumed the gourd, she can immediately expel a belch of fire in a 15-foot cone, dealing 2d6 points of fire damage to all creatures in the area. A successful DC 12 Reflex save halves the damage. If the user elects not to use the fire breath at once, she can store the breath for up to an hour before it dissipates.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS Craft Wondrous Item, burning hands or produce flame
Cost 125 gp

I think that to use the firespitter feat that you presented, you would need to expend a number of gold pieces worth of oil...

It is kinda cool. It's also nearly equivalent to a 2nd-level wizard casting burning hands, if you add in a reflex save. And you can do it as often as you want until you run out of oil/booze/paint thinner. I think some sort of level-based requirement is in order: something like 3-5 ranks in Craft (alchemy)?
