Greetings!
After running with the society in Germany for about a year, I moved to Lausanne, Switzerland, where I would now like to pick up again, running games in English at EPFL (my French is far far too bad).
While I have run games before, and have no lack of low-level modules to run, I have realized that the first session of a new group might just be all pregen characters (or mostly pregen), depending on the amount of system knowledge the players bring to the table (which as of now is unknown).
While the pregens work quite well (at low level at least), I feel that the designated starting module, #5-08, is not that well-suited for pregens. IMO, the whole meet-up part of the scenario just won't work with pregens, and OOC questions from the players like "Well, why DID Valeros/Seoni/Kyra join the society?" are to be expected.
Even when you work around that, the fact remains that the players don't get to play that scenario with their real characters, which is kind of a shame, as it does have a great sense of achievement in it. This is especially true for completely new players, who almost definitely will play a pregen at their first session, even if there are more experienced players there.
Long story short: I'd like to postpone running #5-08 for one session.
The question then is: Which scenario to put in for session 1?
I am specifically looking for an interesting, but simple scenario, that works well with new players, without them losing out on anything by playing pregen characters.
Right now, I am thinking about starting out with "We Be Goblins!". As far as I can remember from playing it, it's a fun, easy to pick up, highly tutorial module.
The only downside I can see right now is that it has nothing to do with PFS itself, and thus is only a teaser, or prologue, of the adventures to (hopefully) come.
Another possibility would be First Steps I, which I have previously run with 4 Pregens just fine, but I am honestly not too fond of that scenario. (Though I admit I have run it with very little preparation...)
I'd really like to hear the opinion of the more experienced GMs on this matter. Maybe there are even better ways to start off, buried in 5 seasons worth of PFS modules?
