Is there a way to do it without resorting to third party products??

Beast Rider archetype, last line for a Medium Cavalier is "additional mounts might be available with GM approval".

And the Giant scorpion is listed under the animal companion list along with the special rules for vermin companions.

I can't seem to find the special rules for vermin companions. Where are they?

I know they are in Ultimate Magic (I wish I could remember the page - my apologies).

They are also on the Animal Companion page of the SRD.

Page 36 of UM.

RD, did you think this up, or get the idea/inspiration from somewhere else?
