Animal Companions - How do they work? (Magic!)

Pathfinder Society

Hey,

so, after trying (for about five to ten minutes) and failing to find a definite ruling, I have to create a topic for this. I'm sure someone will point me instantly to another thread answering every question I have, but I'm willing to risk life and reputation here.

How do animal companions work in PFS play? Or specifically:

How are their HP calculated? Same as for PCs or by some esoteric formula passed down through generations in secret and cursed tomes?

Do they know any tricks except the bonus tricks from the get-go, or do they just start with a single "bonus" trick (i.e. Attack)?

How is teaching additional tricks handled? Do you just make a Handle Animal Check at the end of the session to teach your furry (or scaly, whatever floats your boat) friend a new trick during the vague amount of time between adventures? Can you train your companion for a purpose (i.e. the trick-packages as per the Handle Animal skill) with this roll, if it even exists?

Cheers

4.5 per hit die, plus the usual (con bonus, toughness feat etc)

They come fully trained (7 tricks on a standard one, i reccommend attack attack down heel search defend guard if you don't have animal archive)

One trick per rank in handle animal, happens at an unspecified time of "once per adventure" so it happens in between, whether before in between or after in between is up to the dm.

You can, its just like teaching it all the tricks.

I'm about to play a home campaign taking place entirely in Osirion, where survival will play a role in the campaign.

I'm the party's ranger; there are 7 of us players.

I'm wondering if I should go with a small cat (cheetah/leopard) or bird (eagle/hawk). I'm a new Pathfinder player, and this is my first home campaign. Does one offer an advantage over the other in survival? I would think the bird due to eyesight and range, but it's perhaps weaker in combat.

Should I know anything about feats for an animal companion?

First, this is the PFS part of the forum, so for a home campaign, you'll get more responses to your question on the Advice forum.

If you choose your animal companion based on the survival theme, don't worry about combat. As a ranger, you would want to take the Boon Companion feat for a combat companion, anyway.
You should definitely check out the Animal Archive, especially a trick called "Hunt", which lets your animal companion assist you on Survival checks to find food and water.
You might also want to think about the Falconer archetype from Ultimate Combat, who gets a falcon companion at first level which gets some nice extra tricks for providing food.

Thanks for the speedy and informative answer, mate. That covers pretty much everything I wanted to know and then some.

Cheers
