First of all, welcome to Pathfinder Society!
as far as joining the campaign goes, there are some rules you should know (as a fellow player of LC, I know that you're probably used to the idea by now). These rules can be found in the Pathfinder Society guide to Organized Play, which you can get from the Paizo store (they want people to get it from their store instead of distributing it as a means of tracking active players).
that being said, you'll also want a copy of the "additional resources" document, which you can find here, as anything that you want to use that is not in the core rulebook, you will need to check the additional resources doc to make sure that it's campaign legal.
Finally, if you haven't done so already, you'll need a pathfinder society number, which is used to track adventures that your character has played (handy for making sure that you aren't playing the same adventure on the same character twice), as well as for tracking players in the campaign.
The above all being said, looking at the additional resources, it says:
Gunsmithing does not grant the ability to craft firearms, ammunition, or black powder. Rather, it allows the purchase of bullets, pellets, black powder, and alchemical cartridges (with 1 rank in Craft [alchemy]) at the listed reduced price, but does not grant a discount on the purchase of any firearm.
I hope that answers your questions, and again, welcome!

as for the chronicles, you don't get anything on it for free. The chronicle lists things that you can get, regardless of Fame (they become available to you).
The assumption is that at the end of every scenario, you are turning in everything to the Society, and receiving amount of gold loosely based on what you turn in. You can then use the money to purchase items (including things that are on your chronicles).
This means that if you have a +1 Elf-Slaying Broadsword on your chronicle, you can buy it, and so can everyone else that played the scenario with you.
