Removing cards as you complete adventures

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

I've read several threads where people seem to indicate that you remove "earlier" cards as you add adventure decks. Can someone explain what this means?

When you start a new adventure, add the cards from that adventure deck to all the cards you already have.

So during Adventure B (Perils of the Lost Coast) you will have B & C Cards.
During Adventure 1 (Burnt Offerings) you will have B, C & 1 cards.
During Adventure 2 (Skinsaw Murders) you will have B, C, 1 & 2 cards.
Etc...

Once you start Adventure 3 (Hook Mountain Massacre) there is a rule on the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path card (the card you probably never look at). That rule says...

Rise of the Runelord Adventure Path wrote:
After you begin The Hook Mountain Massacre, whenever you banish a bane with the Basic trait, remove it from the game; whenever you you banish a boon with the Basic trait, you may remove it from the game. After you begin Sins of the Saviors, do the same for cards with the Elite trait.

The traits are in the upper left corner of the cards. If it says basic you MUST remove it if it is a bane, and MAY remove it if it is a boon.

But you only do that when you Banish a card. And there are only particular times you banish a card. Not every time that you put a card back in the box are you technically "Banishing" it. For instance, cards in the location decks when the scenario ends are not banished, they are just put back in the box. So you don't get to remove those cards.

And removed means that it isn't in the pool of available cards when you draw cards setting up a scenario or any other reason while playing a scenario. So store them separately.

I made a worksheet to keep track of the rules of when things are and aren't banished and to keep track of the cards I have removed (because I often switch from one group to another and need to track them for different groups). You are welcome to use it if you want. Here is the link for it.

And you need a place to store those removed cards. You can put them back in the deck boxes. I made little dividers that I stick into each section of the box. I use it to divide the removed cards but also the cards from decks I own but don't yet have in the active pool (again, a consequence of switching groups). Here is the link for that.

I hope all that helps. Good luck!

Thanks for the explanation!

You're welcome. I forgot to mention, be careful not to confuse B card (from the Base Set) with Basic, as not all cards from the Base Set are Basic and some cards from later decks (up to deck 2 I think) have the Basic trait. Its easy to make that mistake. Look for that word "Basic" (and later "Elite") in the upper left corner.

I encourage everyone to download the zip at Hawkmoon269's link There are several helpful tools for managing your removed cards, and more besides that.

Hawkmoon269, thanks for putting this together. It's really helpful. I have three groups at different stages of the adventure, but not to 3 yet, and I was wondering how I was going to keep track of the removed cards.

You are welcome. And thanks. In the interest of full disclosure and non-self promotion, there are some other tools for tracking the removed cards on BGG as well. There is a java application you can put on your computer and also a free to use website you can create an account on, both of which have a feature for it. Both use a database of card names and also allow you to track your character decks, and feats. So if you are more inclined to towards a more advanced technological approach, you should check those out too.
