Our group is looking into starting up this campaign in the near future, and I tend to come up with multiple ideas for characters that fit well within an AP for fluff reasons.
One of the characters I am thinking about is a Human (Kellid) Ranger (Infiltrator archetype). Originally from Realm of the Mammoth Lords, Tolguth.
My question and is the subject of the post. What animal companion is going to be fluffy enough to validate showing up around 4th level? Or should there be a narrative animal written into a back story that the character is working with for the day he gets Hunter's Bond?
Early plans are making me think about pushing the Guardian path because I like the idea of making a tough companion (whether it lives until the end will be left up to the dice gods).
Any suggestions as to my question and/or other pertinent advice for a Ranger that I can chew on?

Well, you can always get a new one (at least from the mechanical point of view).
Technically (as I've not played/GMed this AP), I'd agree that a non-mythical AC would have zero chances of survival and (even more important) would have no impact what-so-ever on the outcome of any encounter later on.
As you stated it would take some planning as the feat/mythic commitment might get over-whelming.

If your GM allows the Animal Compendium book, then you can always take the feat that augments your animal companion (adds +4 levels to the companion, I think up to your level). That said, having the ability to augment your companions and a Hated Enemy of Demons would probably be beneficial. ;)
Also, there are Mythic paths you can take that help your animal companion and let them penetrate damage resistance.

One of my players is a Paladin and his horse is almost always in the thick of combat with the rest of the PCs.
Interestingly, I've actually had an almost as hard time hitting the horse as anyone else, though when I do it's been a close to death hit most times.
I've seen that Animal Companions at about 10th level (at least the Paladin's mount) don't provide a lot of damage to enemies which means the enemies tend to ignore it unless it's either A: in the way or B: the only thing it can currently reach.

Well the plan will be to have Boon Companion at level 5 so that its at least the same level as me, rather than -3 levels. That said, going the Guardian path will allow me to set all, if not most of my Path Abilities with buffing the companion. My gut is sending me to wolf, but that is because the AC list is so limited for Rangers, unlike druids, but that is an argument for a different forum.
