Champion of Irori: Number of Smites

Easy questions: with the Champion of Irori's Smite Chaos/Evil ability, how many smites do you get? This is regardless of the ability to convert ki points to smites.

For example, if I have have a Monk 3 / Paladin 2 / CoI 5, does he gain the same number of smites as a 7th level paladin, or does he basically have 2: one from being a level 2 paladin, and 1 from entering the prestige class?

He gets as many as he would get as a Paladin, PLUS either 1 or 2 from being a Champion of Irori.

The CoI states the damage bonuses use the stacked Paladin/CoI levels, but it clearly delineates extra smites as 1 at 1st level, and another at 8th.
