FEEGLES DON'T ASK FOR HELP! (but I do)

Advice

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I am making a character to apply for a PbP campaign based off the Discworld city watch by Friday. He will be using Absalom in place of Ank-Morpork. PC’s will be part of the city watch. “There will be a fair share of combat but expect social, knowledge, investigation, and physical skills to come in quite handy. I may use some PFS or other published adventures as well as my own material.”

Point Buy of 20
No evil or insane CN shenanigans (have to be able to cooperate with the group)
2 traits
1 drawback
Level 2
1000 gold

The GM worked with me on using the race builder to design a Feegle. Here is what we came up with. (Yeah we know it’s not perfectly Feegle, but it is in the ballpark and should be about the same power level as the other players.)
Fey 2 => lowlight vision
Tiny 4 => +2 dex, -2 str, +2 AC, +2 attack, -2 CMB, -2 CMD, +8 stealth, 0 reach
Slow -1 => 20' move speed
Lang std 0 => common and sylvan
Greater Paragon 2 => +4 str, -2 dex, -2 cha
Advanced Con 4 => +2 con
Natural Attack Slam 1 => 1 slam attack d2 for tiny (head butting people)
Healthy 2 => +4 fort save vs poison and disease, including magical disease (he made a living in the sewers without getting sick)
Stubborn 2 => +2 save vs charm and compulsion
Total is 16 racial points and
str +2
con +2
cha -2

I am initially leaning toward some falconer/urban ranger build (neither of which I have ever done) with a bird big enough to ride. I would say the biggest problem to find a way around is the 0 reach. Any help with that will be appreciated.

For personality, I’m thinking somewhere between Discworld’s Buggy Swires and Dresden’s Toot Toot.

I know most of the Discworld mystique will be in the role play choices and actions. But it helps me personally if I have a build that fits that world, concept, universe.

So, you guys got any ideas?

Assuming your allies are playing 10 RP races, I would tone down your fairy's RP. If you're worried about reach, play an archer or spell caster.

Some of the others are also moderately high RP races or they might be getting some thing else that I don't know about. Among the other submissions I believe there is a 'golem/android', a centaur, sort-of fetchling, etc...

If you've read the books, Feegles aren't really an archer kinda race. I mean I would have a bow. But they definitely aren't worried about getting up close and personal with the opposition. I'm just not entirely sure how to translate that into mechanics. Maybe the best I can do is the mobility feat to make me hard to hit as I close.

Scarab Sages

The easiest way around the reach issue is using a tiny reach weapon. Longspears are simple weapons, and a tiny longspear would have a reach of 1. Or, play a Titan Mauler and use small weapons.

That is just hilarious enough that I have to consider it!

Off the top of my head:

  • A really high acrobatics (skill focus, reckless trait)
  • Mounted Combat -> Ride by Attack (ride by attack can be taken directly at 2nd level using ranger combat style)
  • Dodge -> Mobility -> Spring Attack
  • Escape Route Teamwork Feat, shared with mount (requires Int 3 on mount)
  • As Imbicatus indicated, a tiny reach weapon (lance is nice if you're mounted)
  • Lunge (requires BAB of 6)

You'll definitely want escape artist (perhaps from a trait) given your teeny size (Vagabond Child?)

Given the flavor of the Feegle wiki entry (the extent of my knowledge on the subject), you might well go with barbarian over ranger. You could do Mad Dog Barbarian Archetype.

If you wanted to do Titan Mauler and still wanted the mount, you could do the following feat chain: Nature Soul, Animal Ally, and Boon Companion

Feegle
Neutral
Ranger (combined Urban and Falconer archtypes) mounted combat style
Str 18(16+2), Dex 14, Con 16(14+2), Int 12, Wis 12, Cha 5(7-2) {though I don’t really like dumping my cha this far is seems fairly race appropriate}
Traits: Reckless (acrobatics +1 and class skill) and Beast Bond (+1 handle animal and ride, handle animal is class skill)
Drawback: Pride (You can't abide challenges to your dignity, authority, or honor. When someone threatens, accuses, or challenges you, you take a —2 penalty on Diplomacy checks and Sense Motive checks involving that creature until the creature apologizes to you.)

Don’t know if I want to ride a dog or bird around the city. Either seems appropriate.

1 favored enemy: vermin, mounted combat
2 trick riding
3 mounted combat
5 ride by attack
6 spirited charge
7 boon companion
9 mounted archery
10 mounted skirmisher

Use a lance (or bow) when mounted. It has reach.
Use a tiny lucern hammer (or bow) when dismounted.
Max handle animal (for training my bird) and acrobatics (to avoid AoO)

I’ve never made a character that concentrated this much on ride skills. But a small dog or bird should be able to go almost anywhere. Now how to spend my 1000 gp…

What do you guys think?

You took mounted combat twice. That's a lot of mounted combat.

Take boon companion earlier, maybe 3rd. You should get power attack in that feat stack somewhere.

Mounted archery will be marginal, especially with a flying mount. Might consider something bland like dodge or toughness instead.

If you don't want to dump charisma so hard, take a 10 int, 8(-2) cha! How bad do you need 7 skillpoints instead of 6? :)

Masterwork weapon, masterwork armor for both you and your mount, some backup weapons, a few potions of curative magic, oils of magic weapon, potions of magic fang.
(probably masterwork studded leather for both)

Ha, yes. That first one was supposed to be power attack. Yeah, archery isn't really a Feegle 'thing' anyway, so I don't mind ditching that. Not sure what else to take. I don't think dodge or toughness would be worth it my that point. Maybe iron will, but that is almost as boring. Well, I have several levels to consider that one. Let's think about...

1 favored enemy: vermin, power attack
2 trick riding
3 boon companion
5 favored enemy: dwarves, mounted combat
6 spirited charge
7 ride by attack
9 iron will
10 favored enemy: giant (trolls), mounted skirmisher

I will think about the cha:int adjustment. I am given to understand this will be a very skills intensive game.

Considering the Ankh-Morpork City Watch has a Feegle that rides a vulture, I think you should take the bird companion.

You should either get a pair of silk underpants for a parachute, or a helm of feather fall that screws you into the ground headfirst, requiring the rest of the round to get unstuck. :)
