Making a tougher evil npc

Advice

I'm sure its in the books somewhere, but I'm not finding it, probably just looking in the wrong place though. I have a template for an Evil Cleric that is at CR3, I want to bump that up to CR4 or 5. Is there a template or such that I should be using? How do I do that?

Thanks

Advanced and Fiendish templates (somewhere in the back of the Bestiary), and additional class levels all come to mind as ways to pump up CR

Why don't you just level him up more?

By level him up more, do you mean just level him up the way a PC cleric would? If so, with a CR3, would I presume that he is level 3 for the process? If all that's accurate, I could easily do it, just didn't know that was the case. Is it?

Yeah, just level him up as you would a PC. However, CR 3 doesn't necessarily mean he's level 3. The average NPC has a CR of level-1. However, just look in his stats and it should say something like "Cleric 3" or "Cleric 4" somewhere. That's his level.

thanks. the only clue I get on level is in the spells section where it says "caster level 4" which I presume means the guy is actually 4th level
