Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Hello Guys,

I'm just starting my adventure with pathfinder and have one question:

If I have lets say: "Quarterstaff" ( weapon) and "Lightining Touch" - can I play them both when I encounter a monster and need a combat check?

And does it mean, that when I play as Ezren I will roll D12 +2D4 ( for lightning touch) + D6+D6 ( for the quarterstaff)

Thanks for all the help!

Welcome to the adventure.

You can not play both of them.

Rulebook v2 p11 wrote:

Determine Which Die You're Using. Most monsters and some barriers call for a combat check. Weapons and many other cards that can be used during combat generally tell you what skill to use when you attempt a combat check; if you don’t play such a card, use your Strength or Melee skill. (A few items that can be used in combat don’t use any of your skills; they instead specify the exact dice you need to roll or the result of your die roll.)

Some cards may allow you to replace the required skill for a check with a different one; as part of this action, you may play only 1 card or use only 1 power that changes the skill you are going to use. When you play a card that does this, add that card’s traits to the check; for example, revealing the weapon Longsword +1 for your combat check adds the Sword, Melee, Slashing, and Magic traits to the check.

Both of those cards would count as the 1 card you can play during this step, so you can only use 1 of them. Technically, the Longsword changes it from "Strength/Melee" to "Strenght/Melee"

Mike Selinker, the game's lead designer, let it be known that the next addition of the game will actually use the word "define" here instead of "change" to help clarify this.

Again, welcome, and ask any other questions you come across.

Also, here are somethings you should have or might find helpful.

Make sure you get an updated copy of the rulebook. It is here.

Also, be sure to check the FAQ. There are some changes to clarify things on some of the cards and rules. Most "game changing" is that the recharge check on Detect Magic should only be 4, not 14.

I've made a bunch of stuff you can print out. It helps me organize the game when I play. It also has some helpful info in it here and there. You by no means need it, but you might find it helpful. You can get it here if you want: http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/98267/game-accessories-layout-guides-remo ve-from-game-wo

And again, feel free to ask a question if you need help with something. This game is great fun and I hope you will enjoy it.
