Permanency and Tongues

Rules Questions

Hey everyone, I hope all are well.

I know this has been asked a few times, but from what I could find, nobody really phrased the answer in a way that lets me know if I am understanding it correctly or not.

So, I am playing a Winter Witch. I know I have the option to take the Tongues hex, but I am already bogged down by a bunch of specific hexes I want, even with all of my Bonus Hex feats. I was just curious, for the Tongues spell to be made permanent...

Not sure if it's saying I have to be the one to cast permanency (Which I can't cuz I'm a witch), or if I have to be the one to cast tongues before someone else casts permanency on me. Anyone got a simple clarification on that?

Much appreciated!

Sorry to do this, but *Bump*

Liberty's Edge

To make Tongue permanent you need to cast permanency on yourself.
It valid to use a scroll, but it need to have a Caster level of 11 and 7.500 gp of material components should have been used in its creation. To activate it you need to succeed at a UMD check with a DC of 31 (as you are a witch I assume you have the needed intelligence).

Apparently there is no risk of a mishap when using UMD, only of rolling a 1 and being unable to retry for 24 hours, so you can try and retry as the scroll is not expended if you fail to activate it (check your GM interpretation on both things). That mean that you only need a UMD of 11 to ultimately succeed.

Oh okay. The only downside is... well, I have no ranks in Use Magic Device. It uses Charisma and my Charisma is kinda my dumpy stat, both for gameplay and roleplay purposes, because my character spent a great deal of his life fending for himself in the wild.

I do like the no risk of mishap when using UMD... in theory, if I got a Headband of Vast Intelligence, wore it for 24 hours, then tried the skill, I could do that repeatedly.

Not sure if this is a good idea or not though, heh.
