Gelatinous Cube's Transparent ability.

Transparent (Ex)

Due to its lack of coloration, a gelatinous cube is difficult to discern. A DC 15 Perception check is required to notice a motionless gelatinous cube. Any creature that fails to notice a gelatinous cube and walks into it is automatically engulfed.

Is this perception check:

  • Made automatically, such as a perception check made as a reaction to a stealthed creature?
  • Only made if the party says that it's looking for traps, such as a perception check to find a trap?

    Why?

This came up in a PFS game, so I'd prefer some sort of RAW reasoning, although I'm not adverse to hearing your personal thoughts in addition to your reading of the rules.

  • It's GM FIAT by rights, since it doesn't say.

However, I'd say that due to the intent of the ability saying it's supposed to be difficult to discern, (and not something people can just flat-out look at and be all like, "Yup, totally a gelatinous cube there,") it's something that people would have to be actively looking for in order to detect it.

  • The presence of the gelatinous cube is a observable stimulus? Yes.

If you rule differently a stealthed guy wouldn't be a observable stimulus.

The perception rules say: "Action: Most Perception checks are reactive, made in response to observable stimulus. Intentionally searching for stimulus is a move action." so the perception check is made automatically.

The cube is hard to notice, nothing more.
