If you fail your scenario do you still get to keep any boons that you acquired during your play or do you have to start the scenario with the same deck you used at the first attempt at the scenario

You get to keep what you acquired. You don't get the reward for the scenario though.

Ending a Scenario, Adventure, or Adventure Path If, at any point, you need to advance the blessings deck but there are no cards remaining in it, the scenario ends immediately, and your party of adventurers loses. You also lose if al l of the characters are dead at the same time (see Dying on page 14). You do not earn the reward on the scenario card, and if you’re playing an adventure, you didn’t complete that scenario, and you will need to try again...Once you’ve completed a scenario, whether you win or lose, rebuild your character deck (see Between Games, below). Put all other cards back into the box.

Also, if anybody dies then they are dead.

And, if you're not too scared, there is a marvelous house rule you can implement as well... after the failed scenario, each character banishes one random card from their 'pile' of cards per unclosed location.

Dark Archive

We play with that house rule and Sajan just lost his trusty Amulet of Mighty Fists! (failed on Black Fang due to plain old bad luck with the encounters and henchman placement in the decks, I think).

Scarab Sages

It's like: "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again"...the idea behind the aphorism is that you learn (or improve) from successive attempts. Keep your boons and use them to improve your game; you will eventually succeed.

I'm not a big Fan of this houseruling for flavor- reasons, but I had a lot of Fun with an Adaptation where I replace a Random Boon with a random Monster in every unclosed Location during the next Playthrough. And this stacks for multiple failed runs.

Plus if a Character died, you can't use his belongings during your Deck rebuild.

Then again I failed probably all Scenarios from start to the end of Adventure Deck 2 at least once, so I might be a little biased against loosing random Cards from my Characters.
