In short, if a player, do you have one or, if a GM, what have your players wanted to do with them?
In the Rise campaign I play, my character has a mage guild just outside of Sandpoint in the old sanitarium that he remodeled. He uses it to recruit all good-aligned arcane practitioners (witches, magi, wizards, etc) to be an active force of good (feed homeless, heal sick, fight demons, etc).

I love it when theres an example so far from the others. Makes me jingle, "One of these things is not like the others!"
*handwaves*
Allow them a degree of plot power with it. Don't get too crazy, but essentially give them neat perks as part of it.
Also you can drop in neat cameos when say the party needs to be somewhere and there are enemies in the way. Suddenly magic pew pew! That mage guild you made? Guess what! They heard you were in trouble and are clearing the way woo!
Fun stuff.

Haha. The list wasn't meant to be exhaustive. To the public it has a very friendly/neutral face. The "true" purpose has a bit of a militant side to it that includes fighting demons and routing corruption on Golarion. My character thinks the empyreal lords are the bees knees and is fascinated by Olheon and Ragathiel.

Empyreal Lords ARE the bees knees =D
But yeah, perks here and there with light plot cameos. Also gentleman's agreement to not go crazy about it.
Good for plot devices too.
Man where do we need to go? *Enter mage toady* "Heya! We were doing some research and found something that might interest you!"
