Compulsion Effects

Rules Questions

Focused Disciple: When weaker wills falter, you keep a clear mind. You gain a +2 trait bonus on saving throws against charm and compulsion effects.

1. If I walk into a room and have to make a will save against, oh I don't know, plunging a knife into my heart, is that a compulsion effect?

2. Is Fear (or running away) a compulsion effect?

3. Is staring at the colors of Color Spray a compulsion effect?

Thank you.

An effect is a "compulsion" effect if it says it is. So:

1: Maybe. It depends on what kind of effect is making you do so. It likely will be a compulsion effect, though.

2: The fear spell has the types "necromancy", "fear", and "mind-affecting". It's neither a charm effect nor a compulsion effect. However, there may be other fear effects that have one of the applicable types.

3: The color spray spell has the types "illusion", "pattern", and "mind-affecting". It's neither a charm effect nor a compulsion effect.

For an example of a compulsion effect, see the dominate person spell; it has the types "enchantment", "compulsion", and "mind-affecting". Since it has the "compulsion" type, it's a compulsion effect.

Like "Are" said, Compulsion effects say they are compulsion effects. So it depends on the source of that effect.

The source of effect 1 is unknown, so the answer is "it depends". The fact that it is most likely a compulsion effect doesn't make it so.

Feat the spell is not compulsion. Fear the effect (such as from intimidation) is also not a compulsion effect. so no bonus on that save.

Same for color spray - if it doesn't say Compulsion, it's not one.
